On these two days we toured around the village,
airstrip and then onto the Forward Area. The Forward Area is where the actual tests were carried out.
The
Maralinga Airstrip is amazing, this huge full tar massive runway that is as good today as it was when it was constructed. It is still in full operational status with full solar lighting, taxiways etc. truly a site to see out in the muddle of no where.
The testing area was of immense interest and we learnt a while heap of facts from our guide Robin.
I will provide more details of this when back from the trip but suffice to say that thus piece of Australian history is very interesting and a little disturbing at the same time.
One thing is for sure the military can build excellent tar roads out in the desert.
