Leaving
deep creek in a drizzling rain we made our way to
Gladstone, the gravel road was in very good condition and despite the weather the drive was easy. As the day was very wet we decided to take a roundabout route and visit a number of
places along the way. Most of the small towns along the way to
Derby seemed to have owed their existence to mining of some sort and in some
places there appeared to be some small scale mining still going on. We stopped at
Derby for Morning tea at a very nice café in the main street opposite the Tin
Mine centre. Continuing on we stopped at Scottsdale for supplies and then headed to
Bridport.
Bridport was quite a large town with a boat and fishing base. There was also a large caravan park along the foreshore. After having lunch we then travelled directly across to
George Town via Pipers River. Along the way we passed the Bell Bay Aluminium smelter and a number of other large metal based operations. A short trip then, out to
Low head, where we took some photos of the Historic Pilot Station and the
Lighthouse. There were a lot of privately owned Historic houses,
well preserved and still in use along the road.

The rain was quite heavy and we decided not to venture out but turned and headed to
Launceston and then directly to Longford. We ran into a little problem at the Caravan Park at Longford as they were booked out for the Friday through to Monday. We had not noticed that the V8 Super cars were competing at Symmons Plains, just down the road from Longford. We got a site for the night and made plans to head south and return to Longford on the Monday.
