Today we travelled from Narrabri to
Bingara and camped on the bank of the Gwydir River at a
free camp area that stretches along the river on the road from
Bingara to Keera. The road from Narrabri to
Bingara was bitumen and good with only the occasional causeway to slow down for. Some of these were quite steep so it paid to slow down. There had been some discussion on the
forum about this road but we found it quite easy.
After passing through
Bingara and finding the right road we found the bitumen had narrowed considerably but was still good. We soon came to the start of the
free camping and passed a number of areas that were fairly crowded. There are signs warning of the possibility of flash flooding if it rains, but as it’s been very dry and no signs of rain it looked ok. The tracks off the road are mainly dirt and by the ruts and holes it was obvious that in the wet it wouldn’t be a nice place to be. We found a nice place to
camp right on the river and by ourselves. There were ducks and other water birds on the river which is fast flowing and the water remarkably clear after the Darling. Whilst having a snack in the afternoon we were visited by a small goanna, it sat and watched us and let me get quite close to take a picture.
