Following the recent nitrate tanker explosion on the
Mitchell Highway and the demolition of the
Angellala bridge (and two fire tenders) the highway was closed.
A diversion for light vehicles (car, 4WD, and caravans )has now been opened following the opening of the
Charleville -
Bollon road as a light vehicle (cars, 4WDs and Caravans) a new light vehicle detour ttoday (12th September 2014) using Wheatleigh Road. Wheatleigh Road is approximately 49km south of
Charleville, off the
Charleville –
Bollon Road.
In detail - travelling South from
Charleville take the
Bollon Charleville Road for 50kms - this is sealed. Then turn right (South) 0nto an unsealed section. After 18kms the unsealed road turns to the west rejoining the
Mitchell Highway after a further 50kms. This
junction is north of
Wyandra.
The detour to the highway is 118kms total distance from
Charleville.
