This is definitely the best way to see Australia, in my opinion :)
Slowly with the opportunity to see, hear, smell, feel, even taste everything around you.
I highly recommend learning how to navigate without your GPS, learn how to use a topo and compass and some basic bush survival and get out there, off the roads and fire
trails.
There is a lot of good quality ultralight camping/hiking gear available and many of the links to dedicated sites will have further links to track notes and ideas for good food cache locations to make your loads lighter and the whole experience more enjoyable.
Here's link for The Heysen where you can join groups for sections or contact end to enders

Happy Hiking :)
