Toilet Cassette

Hi all.

Just wondering about the chemicals in the cassette for the caravan toilet. We have used the supplied Thetford stuff but someone mentioned in passing the other day about how he heard some people use Nappysams????

Does anyone have any info or advice as to whether this is an alternative etc. and any pro's or cons.

Cheers all.

The genuine product name is 'Napisan' but most travellers use the generic nappy soakers from Woolworths, Coles or Aldi. The generics are much cheaper.
If you search for Napisan you will get a number of hits on this site. One thread is NAPISAN in portable toilets

We have been using Napisan combined with 1 teaspoon citric acid & 1 glug of eucalyptus oil for over 12 months without any problems with seals (they should be replaced regularly anyway, easy job).
In the flush/top tank we use a small slurp of dishwashing liquid, helps keep the bowl cleaner.
All this means you can empty the tank into a septic system without doing any chemical damage to it

We also use "Oxygen Bleach" Nappisan. The Aldi product has a slightly active higher oxygen content. When you clean the cassette, spray the seals with olive oil spay. Recommended by Thetford.

The woolies brand has a Sodium Percarbonate content of 35% I believe and that is what we should aim for when buying these products. The higher the content the better from an economy point of view.

A desert spoonful a day keeps the smell doctor away.
Only works if there is organic matter in the tank so if only using for urine, as oposed to "Urin" then put some loo paper in the bowl as you flush it down for the Sodium Percarbonate to work on otherwise, they tell me, it is ineffective.

Nephew was using the recommended chemicals and always had a smell, changed to Sodium Percarbonate and no more smell, so he said.

Cheers, Bruce.

Hullo
Have a look at Motherhen's site http://www.australiasomuchtosee.com/ - she is a member of ExplorOz so you could search with her name in it as well.
She has the good oil on many aspects of camping/caravaning
Cheers

So does the napisan go in the top tank or the bottom tank or both tanks?

Cheers

Bottom tank only Garry - unless you want to use some in the top - personally i only use water for flushing either at home or in the caravan. You can check out all the details and options in My Blog.

Been using napisan (home brands) for 4 years now without any problems.

It has no effect on seals.

I spray my seals with olive oil occasionally to keep them soft.

G'day, love the sig name "Arsenal" could add "Urinal" as well, would fit perfectly with the subject.

Phil, do a search on this site using the words "Toilet Chemicals" and you will get enough reading to last a day.

I'm another who advocates Homebrand Nappysan, and Morning fresh dishwashing liquid in the flush tank (just a squirt keeps the bowl slippery !)

Cheers,
Barry
