Nissan Patrol 3L Turbo Diesel

Currently considering a Patrol ST 2001, 3L turbo diesel (to tow 2 tonne van). 60,000 kms on clock - asking $43,000 (dealer). As we have no experience with 4wds we would welcome view on this model as well at tips on what to look for when buying second hand.

Biggy,

For 5k more you could have a new one, and have the piece of mind that you are buying a Patrol with all the bugs ironed out! (If not sure about the bugs/problems then do a search on this site) Also you will have 3yrs warranty with roadside assist etc.

Guys,
we have a 3lt patrol current model and I am hearing tales about engine problems at 100K,s the problem is all these tales are 4th& 5th hand and I have not found any 1st hand information. The suposed fix is a snorkle & 3in exhaust system ,has anybody any 1st hand experience.

Watch out for the early 3.0TD. They have a few bugs that should have been fixed by warranty, but for those dollars may be best to steer clear.

I have a GU 3.0TD that I bought only 6 weeks ago. VERY happy with it, including towing a 1.6T offroad camper. I paid less than that price for a NEW one, but that was with fleet discount. See if your work will let you use their ABN to order. Fleet discount is around $7,000 so you may be able to get a new one for the same dollars. Nissan is not as fussy as some other brands with their fleet discount, especuially with the 2003 compliance model runout (also includes free roobar, towbar and spotties - save a fortune off their list price).

I paid $47600 for my series IV.
NO fleet discount, 30,000km later, I am happy as can be.

FWIW, mine may be for sale in Feb next year (overseas transfer) - same model (ST), less mileage, excellent condition with safety pack etc + lots of accessories looking at around $37K. Let me know if you're interested.

I don't know about these 3.0 TD's, my boss has had his back to the dealer twice now, not onlly did they have it for over a week the second time but they wouldn't even give him a loan car (All out apparently), he got it back the other day and we were driving along through Perth and the engine light came on again. It keeps doing it, then it start blowing sh%t loads of smoke and looses all it's power. Nissan have actually said to the dealer they don't know what's wrong, the computer is telling them it needs a new motor but it must be wrong. It's 1 year old this month and has only done 20k of city driving, no country or off road. They also said that they have just had two more of come in with the same problem and Nissan still does not know what is wrong with them! They have replaced turbo valves, sensors, relays etc etc. Not good in my eyes. The least they could do it give him a loan car as he was told "we don't know when you will have it back"
It's going back in for the third time in a couple of days.

Sorry to hear your horror story however...
My 2003 3l gu auto has just completed a 25000km trip the long way from sydney in may to perth in october via cape york, gulf, coberg, kalumbaroo, gib river etc etc without any problems (apart from two punctures, a windscreen and the once new OME suspension is now u/s) The only hint of problems was the surpent belt would always slip a bit after 400mm plus water crossings - the hydraulic belt tensioner was fixed under waranty.
Next year the canning if time permits ...
Would I buy one again - YES!!

Many have no problems with their 30 TD patrol - those that dont use them. Most of the local 4x4 club are now changing to the TD6 patrol as a result of a long list of problems (and they arent the only ones either).

Myself, glad I stayed with Toyota 'cause it donr break any near as often (on once in 350k km - and that was LPG valve anyway).

For towing you need torque across a broad reve range, not outright power (but it does help at the lights :-)

If it is a 2001 I would be carefull & check out the motor.

I have a 2000 model, just recently Nissan had to replace the motor at 60,000Km as this model has a problem with the Oil Sprays & Piston composition. They replaced my engine with a new long motor, Computor & loom. This has apparently cured the problem

I also agree with the others, at $43,000 why not do a bit of bargaining with the Nissan dealers as I'm sure they will do a deal and the diff wont be all that great
