Just back home after travelling Perth - Townsville - Perth on the Great Central Road and Plenty Highway.

I was driving a Prado 120.

All the dirt stretches are in good condition with cruising at 100km/h OK for most of the way. Did the journey over in 4 days and pushed it coming home and did it in 3 days. The 180l fuel capacity of the Prado was appreciated as on most occasions I passed the roadhouses on the GCR outside opening hours.

No, but that was not the object of the trip. I needed to go to Townsville for family reasons

Townsville to Perth? =5500km
3 days = 1833km/day
@ 100km/hr = 18 hrs driving per day, not allowing for any stops.

Are you sure?
Cheers

No, you're 1,000-odd km too high Allan. 5,500km is via the Nullarbor.

Perth to Townsville via the Great Central to Alice & then Boulia & Winton is closer to 4,500 km.

Even so 4500/3 = 1500 a day @ 100km/hr is still 15 hrs a day without stops.

Be cheaper to fly wouldn't it?

In any event, I'm glad it wasn't me doing it!

Cheers

Wow.. I've done Townsville - Syd in two days. Tsv to Murwillimbah then to Syd on day two. 2500K's and that was a push, on highways all the way. 4500K's in three, on dirt, thats just dangerous.

I went via Urandangie and Isa, A bit over 4000km so just over 1000km / day.

Return was quicker with the last day (Docker river - Perth about 1900km) by far the longest day

wow, sitting on a hundred around Urandangi. Didn't come across any unmarked dips? I figure you did a fair bit of night time driving- how'd you handle the roos-especially east of Isa? Glad you made it safe and sound. Use much oil?

The section from the Plenty to Urandangie and out to the bitumen was certainly not 100k/h road.

Did not use any oil - checked regularly.

Only lengthy night drive was from Kalgoorlie to Perth. Did not see any roos. A few Emus and many camels on the GCR.

Had a near thing with a donkey when it ran in front of me on the Plenty H'way. and that was mid morning.

We will be heading that way in May heading back to Toowoomba but I am sure we won't be doing it that quick we will be lucky to be back in Toowoomba by the end of July. We will be towing our Van taking our time. Have our permits sorted already.
