We are an American couple planning on coming to Australia in April 2012 and spending a year or three driving around with a caravan. We have subscribed to Caravan World for about a year now and are looking at 19-22 foot caravan and a diesel tow rig. Hope to spend some time
bush camping to reduce expenses. We suspect that most of our questions would not be of general group interest. Please PM us for our current list of questions. Especially interested in hearing from Americans who are/have done the same

Hallo Earl
Why a PM? Forums are for sharing. There might be others planning a similar sort of thing and could benefit from all the replies.
Cheers, Case, New Zealand.

Would be happy to post whole list, but it is long. However if enough members think it should be posted I will do so.

Hello Earl,
What part of the states are you from? I can't actually send you a PM because I'm not a paid subscriber to this sight but more than willing to help out where I can.

Start with introducing yourselves and asking just a few questions eg based on where you are thinking of starting from or the rig you need and see how you go! Usually people's answers generate more ideas from others. Lots of helpful people here. PMs are not likely to generate much interest. If you are a member of this site you will get access to a lot of information via
blogs etc and an excellent book/map store. Good luck! Lynne

Hi Earl,
You would probably be better off posting your questions directly on this
forum. Its a friendly and helpful site, I'm sure no one would mind a heap of questions. Im not sure what a PM is but in any case, on this site the messaging system is only available to members.
You will be very welcome when you visit Oz, and you will enjoy yourselves I'm sure. I note your comment about
bush camping - dont think of it just as a way to keep costs down. Many of the best parts of Australia can only be experienced if you are prepared to
bush camp, and quite a few of those
places are not readily accessible with a conventional caravan.
Cheers,
Val

As several others have said, post your questions.
There are many
well informed people on here that could answer them, but may not be members so can not PM you.
On a slight side note, you mention visiting for possibly more than 1 year. Be 100% certain that you have an Australian visa allowing you to stay that long, as far as I was aware you could only get a 12 month tourist visa.
Regards,
Kelvin

Yes, I can only get a 12 month visa. Hope to get 12 months, return to USA for one month+/- to visit the grandkids and then get another 12 month visa. Has anyone done this?

only thing ill say is make sure your fully aware of the cost of living here in Australia
visitors from countries we used to traditionally think of as expensive like the UK etc are shocked when they see the prices of everything over here

All your questions could have been answered already with all the replies so far lol. Better putting them on here for all to see. Also someone might give a reply and some else sees it and has a better solution.

not sure whether we are allowed to mention caravan online sales websites but there is a big one that many use if you google caravan sales it probably pops up tops. When we were looking at buying a secondhand off-road caravan we spent ages perusing this particular site and often would see Toyota and Kedron or Toyota and Trackmaster, people wanting to sell their complete set-up. Quite often they looked like pretty good value for money if you were in the market for that sort of thing, worth a look.

Hi Earl and welcome
My first comment would be look around the 19' (internal) mark but not much bigger. Go for a sturdily built van preferably equipped with
solar power and own small bathroom. The larger you get, the larger tow vehicles you need, and size does limit you in some, but not most,
places.
I would be pleased to add more by PM, but as a non paid up member, you do not have that option.

Hello and welcome Earl. I'd reccomend the first sensible investment would be to spend a few $ on an Exploroz
membership. It will allow for much better communications with the very wide and valuable experience base this
forum and site contain.
You could also utilise a blog to list your questions. This ensures that they are always updateable and non-members can respond in the comments section as
well. These posts will archive and lock after a month or so where as the
blogs always remain active.
Good luck.
Mick
