Hi All....I have a 99 Toyota SR5 Hilux with an DTS Turbo fitted and I was thinking of adding an intercooler to this ....my Question is will this increase my
hill climbing power when towing a camper or even overtaking as hang time is a bit scary sometimes. If anyone has any thoughts and can point me in some direction it would be most appreciated. (brand names and tips if you have one fitted)
CHEERS .......MICK
Life is a rehearsal

They just did a huge
test in 4X4 Monthly they tested turbos, intercoolers, exhaust, chips, May pay you to grab a copy and see if there is any thing in there that may be of interest of you. There is a mention of the DTS turbo quit interesting....................

Will it increase power?
Yes, a lot will depend on how
well it is tuned after the intercooler is fitted.
A good dyno tune after its fitted is recommended, this may also include valve clearences and injector pump timing and an injector service if they havent been done in living memory.
You can tune it for lower EGT's and similar power to what you have at the moment or it will allow you to increase fuel flow and maintain egts to what you currently have and have a bit more power.
Depending on the type you buy, front mount, top mount or water cooled it can also add an additional heat load to your existing cooling system.
Google DTS, Safari and frozen boost for an idea of whats out there.
cheers

Hi Mick,
Whilst not having the same vehicle as you, I have a LC100 series 1HZ engine with a garret turbo and exhaust. It was pretty good but then I bought a big van and I was worried about egt's so I had an intercooler fitted. (front mount) It made heaps of difference to my 4x4 I was surprised I did not expect such an improvement. I would also certainly recommend you have it fitted at reputable turbo specialist that can dyno and tune it for you. I used Turbo Glide in Woolongong as they fitted my turbo original. I was very pleased with their service.
Good luck
Ken

In recent times I've often thought about fitting an intercooler to my aftermarket turbo'd 1HZ motor, despite the advice of the people that fitted my turbo that it was unnecessary and not worth the money and would not improve performance.
I have an EGT gauge fitted and notice that the temperature can very quickly exceed recommended levels if I push that little bit extra going up hills or overtaking etc. I reckon that an intercooler would at the very least keep the EGT down to prolong engine life. If it provides more power or torque then that would be a bonus to me. I would recommend a 3" mandrel bent exhaust too, this did make a noticeable difference to my motor. More torque lower down.
