Is this size tyre okay as a spare for my Hilux 4x4?

Howdy all,

I recently got 4 new Yokohamas for my Hilux 4x4. The tyres, as per manufacturer's specs, are: 255/70 R15.

However, my spare tyre is currently an old Coopers tyre I previously had on the car, but since this uses the older imperial measurements, the size is 31x10.5 R15.

Now, when I had all Coopers tyres on my car that was fine, but now that I have 4 Yokohamas with the metric 255/70 R15 measurement on the car, I am wondering whether the Coopers imperial 31x10.5 R15 is going to cause a problem as a spare tyre, because the rolling radius, diameter and circumference will be different?

Also just curious as to whether it would only be a problem on-road as to off-road. In other words, what I'm asking is whether this tyre is safe to use as a spare at all times and, if not, whether it's safe to use as a spare when off-road only?

Hope this makes sense!

:)

I would avoid using this tyre on your vehicle if at all possable, and certainly never whilst in a 4wd situation. The OD of your new tyres 255/70r15 is 739mm wilst the 31-10.5r15 has on od of 778mm. The only time I would use this as a spare would be for a short distance in 2WD and only if fitted to a front wheel, as fitting it to the rear will destroy the limited slip diff in a very short time/distance.

Hope this helps

I think you need to get another tyre ,this is to big a differance in 4x4 or on the back , maybe ok for a short spell, you will get big wind up in trans , unwise to use.
cheers nick

Why do we carry spare tyre??? so when things go to S$#T we can get out of trouble. Until then you will never need it. But when you do!
Recovery equipment and spare tyres are # one on my list. Cars need 5 good tyres not 4.

Second thing is when you do need it you dont need the lecture from the better half of why did you buy XXX instead of a proper spare.

I would say no , http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp?action=submit .. too big a difference, you will stuff the diff centre up as one wheel goes round quicker than the other.

Having just tried something similar in my jeep I can assure you it is a terrible idea. You get diff wind-up very quickly. Then you can't get out of 4WD. I went back, forward, backwards circles, forward circles, crying, wailing, etc. Fortunately the jeep has a on road 4wd function and I drove it home on that. It didn't like it though. It took quite a while to settle down.

Hi Everyone

Thank you so much for your responses. Tomorrow I will be replacing the Coopers Tyre from my spare wheel with another tyre.

Thanks again!
