Hello,

Good forum. Long time reader.

Need some advice from Patrol and Landcruiser owners

This is primarily only for cost reasons to reduce my fuel bill each week.

Long post sorry.

I have a landcruiser 100 series V8 GXV V8 4.7i (top line for that year) (2000 model) and it eats fuel obviously.

Car runs perfect and has been maintained well and it has 245,000 kms on it now but doesnt miss a beat.

I need a car with largeish tow limit which is why I own it. This is also my only car so I do around 600kms a week combo of highway and town in it and also like road trips away. (up to total of 30,000kms a year)

I have thought of having a small car for daily driver but the rego cost and insurance outweighs the benefit and also for my work, I need to carry a lot of stuff.

I am now looking at either keeping this 100 series as I love it and putting it on LPG (dual fuel)...
I do prefer the 100 series due to the 3500kg tow limit as I have at times needed more then the patrol is allowed but its not a huge deciding factor as 90% of time I dont need the extra tow limit.

But I have to admit, I could sell the landcruiser and buy a patrol and have some $ left over (at least a few thousand easy)

Do I still get the $1250 grant towards conversion? As its second hand around 10+ years old.

How much is the conversion for a good LPG kit approx?

I have heard bad reports about LPG on the V8 cruisers. Is this true or fake?

Or buying a 1999/2000 GU Ti patrol petrol 4.5i that is already on LGP converted by previous owner etc. Any issues with LPG on the patrols?

I dont really want the tank in the cabin due to space but I also dont want to get hooked up when 4x4ing with tank underneath?

I was thinking maybe they could put it where spare wheel is and Ill mount swing bars on the back for the spare tyre. Or even remove one of the petrol tanks from underneath?

What kind of fuel consumption would I get from a GU and a 100 Series on LPG? Town and

Lastly, is turbo deisel an option or not really cost wise on fuel and maintenance/repair incase of failure etc?

Thanks
William

My son bought a 4.8 2006 gu patrol 5 months ago converted it to the newest gas system $5200 inc. a new petrol tank as his did not have the aux. tank.
he got $1500 from the government as it was done before July and sold his 150l fuel tank for $800. He gets 340k's from 90l's LPG around town with no noticeable loss of power as I do in my gu patrol.

His is a power house compared to my 4.2l GU on gas ,when he needs power it automatically changes to petrol and back again. As it sounds I am filled with envy.

No, I used to have a 96 4.2 after market turbo diesel GU 10 years ago (beautiful truck) but was forced to sell due to business losses, then bought an older 89 GU already fitted with gas, had since 1993.

Yeh thats one thing I was looking at (Deisel) but as it would have a fair few kms as I cant buy new, I was worried about maintenance cost of old Deisels.

Similar story to you I guess.

I too am looking at this as I either need to sell and get something cheaper on fuel or go LPG due to business being very very slow :(

But I love my 100 series too :(

William,
Have simular issues with my 01 Landcruiser but it's a 4.5 lt petrol and spoke to a very informative guy named Ron from Torquegas at Caloundra on Sunshine Coast in Q,ld. Cost for the latest and best sequential system was around $5,200 and able to claim $1,250 rebate providing its private use vehicle. He also quoted me on a simular but good system for around $3.800 with same rebate applicable. They can remove your auxillary tank and spare to install. I can,t help you with fuel figures, but I believe you use about 30% more gas but its generally half the price of unleaded fuel. The guys name at torquegas is Ron Flannigan and I think he is the Q,ld Agent for them and his contact no is :07 5492 5535. I,m not sure where you are but he may be able to steer you to a local installer.
Regards Zappa

Hi William

The Patrol is rated at 3500kg also and is a better tower than the cruiser.

Its not just the patrols extras 15kw and torque , but its because the Patrol has a wider flatter torque band, it you look at the Cruisers its quite peaky, which is due to the finer engine control system.
This system makes it run leaner and leads to about 10% better fuel consumption.
The same system makes it a but touchy on gas , it can work well but is less tolerant than the Patrol.
On the other hand the equivalent Patrol could be obtained in a manual which has some advantages for fuel use.

The Patrol also had a lower C of G and longer wheelbase - all good towing points.

You looking around 22lt of gas per hundred Km light duties.

As most people say they don't notice the power drop on those gas systems, but it is there and real if you use the power.
I am still waiting for an effective Liquid phase gas injection system to be available on those cars , this preserves the power - but alas they are not quite there yet.

The 4800 patrol has probably the lowest cost of ownership of those big wagons.

The 151kw Turbo diesel cruiser was a real winner towing but overall was a very high cost car to run overall.
