Hi,
We will be driving from
Melbourne to
Perth mid November - having also done the drive last year - and would like to do the track between
Norseman and
Hyden.
Prior to our final decision does anyone know the condition of the track?
We will be driving new 4WD and towing ON road new Jacyo camper trailer.
Looking for info / advice on road condition / dust / time / facilities if any on road?
Much appreciate any assistance

It is almost 12 months since we were on it but I don't think it would have changed too much. It is a good gravel road, there are a few mines out that way so is kept in pretty good condition. Of course if it is dry there will be dust. There are no facilities along it, other than some
bush camping spots.

Good high-speed dirt. There is a small chance you may get stuck behind an ore truck. Just back off - you won't be able to pass!
Camping or picnic at Lake Johnson, or a bit further west,
The Breakaways (signposted) is a nice overnight
campsite amongst some (believe it or not) breakaway country. Includes pit
toilets, but no water.
There are some interesting POIs along the way, signposted with numbers. For a guide, drop into the
Norseman Shire office and ask for a guide pamphlet.
And the fuel right in town is cheaper than that at the Eyre Highway
junction.
cheers, Gerry

As said above - a good and usually
well maintained road. It is wide, and used by mining road trains - watch out as they roar past you - it is their road. If you are familiar with driving on dirt roads, it is a very easy drive. When the road was used as an alternative road when the Great Eastern Highway was closed during the Boorabbin fires, there were a number of accidents from people who didn't know how to drive when off the black top.
The road does get closed after heavy rain - not expected in November. Expect dust as with any dirt road.
Gerry has mentioned the two best
camp spots, although other rocks shown on the discovery trail brochure also make good private camping. Even if not camping there, call in and see
the Breakaways. Pit
toilet only at each of these sites.
No fuel or water between
Norseman and
Hyden but at 300 odd kilometres it is not a huge distance. We usually stop overnight at either of Breakaways or
Lake Johnston.

We just covered that track three weeks ago and found it very easy driving.
As mentioned there are heaps of camping spots along the track and a special mention is to STAY at
the Breakaways. This is a magical Spot.
When we were there we were the only campers there which made it even more special for us.
Yes there are mines and trucks present on the road but if you give them special care,(they are working you are on holiday) nothing will bother you.
I would take the time to visit the shire office before you embark on the trip to
check out the road conditions and if rain is about to fall think about the trip.
The road is prone to become impassable after heavy rain.
Don't stay in
Hyden too expensive carry on to "Tressies Caravan Park at Karlgarin just a further 20 odd k's down the track.

We were at
Hyden just over a month ago speaking to a few people( I used to work in that area) and they said wont be long and the
Norseman road will be sealed. According to them the base works were already in progress

The
Hyden -
Norseman road is in excellent condition. They are grading it in spots but dont let that worry you. I travelled the Forrestania to Victoria Rocks Rd a few weeks ago. You will easily tow a van - yes it will be a little dusty but welcome to most roads around the goldfields.
They closed the road on me last 2 times i travelled it but i wasnt about to turn around and travel 2 hrs back then 5 hours to go around via yellowdine AGAIN! especially when it said "road open" at
coolgardie, so i just "happened to enter the road from another road that must have been after the
road closed sign", and i also encounted another couple towing a kimberly trying to get out from the
road closed sign for which i guided them around.
