Okay, I've spent a frustrating few days trying to find a set of all terrain tyres for my 2005 Hilux SR5 4x4 Dual Cab (i.e. the new model released in 2005).

Anyway, the tyre specs for this model are: 255/70 R15C 112/110S.

I haven't had trouble getting tyres in the past, but every all terrain tyre I've chosen this time around doesn't come in this size, so now I'm wondering whether I should opt for 16" wheels to increase my options. The only problem is that it seems to do so would mean I'd end up going for a narrower tyre (i.e. 245 instead of 255) if I wanted to ensure the vehicle was still "legal".

So, can anyone refer me to some all terrain tyres I can have with the current specs or, if not, what else I can do and remain legal (without having to spend $$$ to recalibrate my speedo etc).

I'm hoping that I've just missed a brand of tyre out there. I have to admit I haven't checked out Coopers, but that's because I used Coopers before my current set and wasn't very impressed (lost two tyres due to sidewall punctures) so that's turned me off them.

Any recommendations would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

try "tirerack" in the US, mate had his delivered in just over a week! and 2/3 of the price including freight.
I believe most tyres are $75 delivery to your door.

Um, not sure. I did try to do a comparison on the Tyre Size Calculator, but couldn't do one between imperial and metric tyres. But I'll go back and use it again and record the results separately to do a comparison that way.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I just got the BFG MT km2 245/75r/16 and are quiet on the road, good grip on all surface instead of AT's. Quite impressed with them

Thanks for your response.

I have no doubt that these are excellent tyres - but I really was after an all terrain tyre not a full-on off-road tyre. Most weeks I do about 600km highway driving (for work), but I also need the off-road flexibility as we go camping a lot on weekends or holidays.

When off-road, my usage is about 50/50 sand/dirt driving, but I'm probably off-road 1-in-4 weekends on average throughout an entire year, so can't really justify going with full off-road tyres.

You didn't look to hard......Cooper makes a 265/70/15 ATR that fits Hilux, that's what we had on ours or you could go the 16 inch rim option and use 245/75/16 or if you have a suspension lift 265/75/16.

Make sure you get light truck versions (LT).

Most people who have Hilux's opt for the above tyre sizes.

Jump on the "New Hilux Forum" and have a look.

Any tyre in an A/T casing have soft sidewalls and even most M/T do so sidewall puntures is more to do with driver error then a poor tyre design.

Well, as I said in my original post, I wasn't looking at Coopers Tyres.

And most sidewall punctures may be due to driver error, but one of mine happened at 50km/h on one of the busiest main roads on the Sunshine Coast - so I'm certain that wasn't my fault. The Coopers dealer had no explanation for it, so my hesitancy has more to do with their attitude and the "dodgy" capital city warranty they give you. Anyway, I now use one of the Coopers as my spare.

I know that no tyre is perfect and that someone out there will have had bad experiences with any tyre I may bring up, but for now I'm keeping clear of Coopers.

Thanks for the tip on the Hilux forum - will take a look.

Went straight to the Bridgestone D694 specs and there is a 255/70 R15C 112S available.
IMHO, one of the best ATs available for the price (<$300) - good in the wet on bitumen as well and with reasonable grip on a variety of unsealed surfaces/tracks.
You will find many people on this forum who are serious 4WD tourers, as well as commercial operators, who use these tyres time and again.
Cheers

hello monomeeth , it may be a bit far down the track now since you posted but just in-case it may also be worth you looking at the Nexens..31x10.50R15 LT AT's...I have them on my dual cab..have not had them off road yet but I seem to be getting great wear out of them ...at about 35'000 klm's now and at about half tread depth tread left....I paid about 129.00 each for them at the time...I also carry about 300kgs permanently in the tub....cheers
