Gunbarrel Highway

Hi all.
Planning a trip for next year. Can someone tell me if the Gunbarrel Highway from Mulga Park to the Great Central Road near Giles is still operational and what it is like

I have looked at this site and cant find anything on this section of road.

I am looking for ways to get to the southern end of Sandy Blight junction Road

I would be coming from the east through Victory Downs

Thank you

Hi Wayne,

I can't see why the Gunbarrel in the area would not be still operational - it services a number of Aboriginal Communities.

When I went through in 1997 it was a really good road.

Download your permit here: http://www.anangu.com.au/permits.html

Have your reason for research ready or contact the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs if you have any dramas getting a permit.

Cheers
Alan

Hi Wayne,

If you ringTheresa Stanley

Receptionist/Permit Officer

Ngaanyatjarra Council

Phone: 89501711

Fax: 89531892

Email: reception@ngaanyatjarra.org.au

she will send you a permit pack that covers all areas under the control of the Ngaanyatjarra Communities which includes the Gunbarrell, including the abandoned section, Sandy Blight Junction Road and alot of others in the area. Includes a map and other usefull info.

Cheers, Wooly

Hi Wayne

The only way you will be able to travel through the APY Lands is if you know someone. When you read the conditions on the permit application form, page 2 stipulates "NO TRANSIT PERMITS"

The only way is to head out past Docker River and then head up the SBJ Track which is a good drive.

Another good thing is that the permits that you require to do that trip (5 Permits in total - yes you have read correct) are all free.

The Victory Downs road is a good road to follow and when you get to Mulga Park you head north. There is good camping on that road with great views of Mount Conner from your camp site.

Thanks guys for the info. Gees who said life was meant to be easy!!

Yes Stephen that was the way I was originally planing to go. I was just looking for something more adventurous and the GBH looked like a good trip. Mostly because its an Icon as far as outback tracks are concerned. Just about everybody has heard of the GBH but not too many have had the privilege of traveling on it from what you guys are saying..

Research, I got to think of something to research in that area ???? ;-)

Excuse my ignorance but are the AYP Lands and the Ngaanyatjarra Council the same people or do they control different areas.

Thank you

We just recently got a permit for Anne Beadell Highway, Gunbarrell Highway, Heather Highway, Great Central Road from the Ngaanyatjurra Council. Was a straightforward application. Just had to submit a bit of an itinerary and were only allowed a max. of 2 weeks on their lands. There is an abandoned section of the Gunbarrell which they stipulate a minimum of 2 vehicles and a maximum of 5 vehicles at one time but other than that they were good to get on with and only took a couple of weeks to get the permit.
We are also travelling David Carnegie Road and Hunt Oil Road but no permit is required for them.
As far as I know the Gunbarrell is a reasonable road with its fair share of corrugations but fairly well travelled.
Not sure about the APY lands though

Hi Anthony,

The original Gunbarrel Highway starts from Victory Downs in the NT via Mulga Park along the top end of SA to Giles and etc...

Many radicals, including the owners of this site forgo their responsibility of truth in place of commercial gain and indeed general laziness....

Historians such as myself, will never ever let the truth of history be forgotten, so I thought I had better remind you :))

D&M - I still like Exploroz though..

Regards
Alan

Hi Wooly and Wayne

We have travelled all the areas that you wish to travel, including all through the APY Lands. I knew a few local Aboriginal people that were living in a couple of Communities and to be honest, I wanted to see their land. It was a great experience and Fiona and I and our young boys travelled solo through the whole area a very long time ago. When I received the permits back, it was classed as a "Family Visit" and if not for the fact of knowing the locals them, I was told that we would never have been issues permits.

As Alan has stated, the APY Lands are very different from other area in the NT and WA controlled by the Ngaanyatjarra Council and it just as different as calling a French person that they are British, you will insult them greatly and to this very day, there is still great friction between family groups for various reasons.

I know today that there are small organised tourist groups that now have access through the APY Lands, but not sure on what areas that they travel through. I still have contacts living there and have even been asked a few years ago to take a family that I know to a funeral of someone that I knew, but was not able to get the time off of work for such a quick visit.

As big as the country is out there is still very small, as when we visited one family at a community, they knew that we were coming, yet we had not spoken or seen anyone else, they just keep a close eye out on anyone travelling through their lands.

Cheers

Thanks for that info equinox: I now have a better understanding of who I need to contact for permits. I am going to give the APY ago and see how I go. Nothing ventured nothing gained as they say.
