Hi. Leaving Shellharbour (Wollongong) for Silverton on friday. Towing a 21ft Sterling Outback. Google maps and this site's mapping send me to Hay,Ivanhoe and then to Menindee, Broken Hill. The road information says it is open but would any one have an idea of how rough it is. I know I can go up to Willcania but the Menindee way is quite a bit shorter. Thanks,Bob.

Toyocrusa,
I came home from Menindee last thursday and the road was in good condition.
I wasnt towing but it only took me 2 1/4 hours and that was from Copi Hollow and that was driving into the rising sun.
Road was dusty but didnt have its usual tyre ruts from previous wet weather use.
In case your interested the road from Hilston to Mossgiel was also very good .
cheers
Howard

Hi Howard. Had a look at the Hillston/Mossgiel way, might give that a try as well. I guess you went through Temora, Griffith from Bowning turn off. Should save another 100k or so. Thanks again, Bob

Dave B ,
no issue
will see you in camp on monday night.
SHMBO cannot get off work so I will do a solo.
Bob,
yes thats the way I normally go to Broken Hill from Canberra.
Hilston to Mossgiel does get shut with very little rain.
PS just watch a few of the grids some have a bit of a hole on the approach and they are all definitely single lane.
regards
Howard

G'day Toyocrusa, I was talking to someone the other day and they said they had come through that way and it was a bit rough.

They were visitors here so I can't check any more with them.

Maybe a call to the pub at Ivanhoe or Menindee might help.
Unfortunately what someone says is alright is bloody rough by someone elses standards, and vice versa.
See you in Silverton.

cheers

Dave

Thanks Dave. Really looking forward to it. I thought to ask when we get to Ivanhoe if all else fails but from what Howard says it should be OK. Got a GoPro camera set up so hoping to get a bit of in car and under van video as well. Cheers Bob

Following on from a good report on the Hillston/Mossgeil Rd, I would go via Bowning,
Harden, Wallandbeen, West Wyalong & then the road from Rankin Springs to Hillston.
Some of it is unsealed, or stay on the tar via Goolgowi. I make it about 600km to
Hillston, turning at Rankin Springs........oldbaz.

Bob, just a slight update on that route..dont take Bowning exit but continue on to
Binalong exit on the new Illalong deviation...you turn right before Conroys Gap..well
signposted.......oldbaz.
