Hi Guys,

Looking to start enjoying the great outdoors again. Have not camped for many years so need to refresh most of my equipment.

Trying to determine the best options for cooking. Most trips will be short (1-3 days) so I would like to keep the setup as simple as possible. I am thinking that I will need a BBQ grill plate, frypan, camp oven and billy. Mainly will want to cook roasts and BBQ stuff.

I have read good reviews on the Hillbilly gear (www.campingwithhillbilly.com). I was going to get one of their big (700 x 480) folding BBQ's and the 12.5 camp oven. But... then noticed the cook stand. Do you think this would be a better option than the folding BBQ? I am a bit concerned about the stability of the stand. It also looks like you have to slide the items off one by one. Could be a bit painful for cleaning, etc.

Appreciate any input/advice.

Cheers!

I reckon the cooking stand is more a pain in the arse than anything else. First off, there are many days of the year you can't even have a fire. Also, sometime the ground can be so hard it's not worth the trouble hammering it in.

About the only time I would use one is if I had a permanent spot at caravan park. Not ready for that yet though...have many many more years of traveling first.

Meant to add...it's very uncomfortable cooking that low to the ground too.

Tends to be one of those things that is fun the 1st or 2nd time. You get the feeling of a bushman of many years ago. But the novelty wears off very very quick.

I am a fan of the Hillbilly range of camping equipment.

The first and most useful investment you can make is the 12.5l Bush King camp oven.
You can also add accessories as and when required.
Things such as the gas ring attachment and vegetable ring with give you extra functionality.
I bought a complete kit at one of the 4x4 & camping shows some years ago and regard my purchase as one of the best decisions I have made.

I have also bought a folding handle frypan which is great for quick breakfasts.

I also have a folding campfire BBQ although this is not a Hillbilly brand.

To top off our camp cooking gear we also use a Cobb Cooker at times. so we are well served with all our gear.

Good hunting!

Bill

We used the hillbilly stand and large oven for 3 yrs while we travelled. We cooked some amazing meals and found it to be well worth the purchase. IMHO it is the best setup for cooking on (I'm sure others will disagree). They are great to cook on and easy to clean. You don't need a lot of heat or a big fire like a heavy iron plate. I like the stand because you can adjust the heat, keep food warm without burning it, and reheat easy. The ovens cook very well and again don't require a lot of heat. On a really wey day we cooked a roast in the oven with heat beads on top and a small piece if roofing iron we found in the bush to keep the rain off. They do take a little bit of getting used to as they don't need a lot of heat so burn easy if your used to cokking on a normal bbq plate or old cast iron pot. They are easy to set up over the fire. We didn't really have much of a problem puting the spike in the ground. They are good value

181 for another point of view we have used the camp oven for several years and every now and then pull it out for the fun of it but we have found that the Weber Q is more versitile less weight and can do everything the others can do and more from boiling the kettle to making a cake or that favourite damper even when raining or when total fire ban or no wood.

Hi Alan,

I have had a Weber Q (I also have a Summit 650 and Weber Kettle). The Q was fantastic and I will defiantly get another for summer camping when a fire is not allowed. However, where possible I prefer to cook over a fire.

Cheers,

AW

G'day 181,
Is that your prisoner No??
I am a huge fan of the hillbilly camp oven. For a stand (when required) I use a small piece of bendadble 1" sq, steel mesh about 2' long and 1' wide. I bend it in a 'U' shape to hold the hillbilly or hillbilly lid as a frypan, and flatten it completely to store it. Great for morning toast & the billy as well. I borrowed this idea from a very well respected bushy, and all round nice bloke, so I call it Norm's Mesh. It's light to carry as well.
This mesh will hold a full 20litre bucket of water for heating, as long as it is not glowing red.
Back to Hillbilly - I bought the extension ring for the lid, as when baking bread it hit the lid, and blackened the the top.
I always clean and dry the hillbilly on the fire after use, it's like gunmetal blue, and will never rust when treated well.

You can't go wrong,

Cheers,
Bill

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies!

I am pretty sold on the BBQ. Figure I can use this for grilling/frying, plus as a stand for the frypan and camp oven. The 700 x 480 looks good - http://www.campingwithhillbilly.com/bbq.php

As for the camp oven, I just went to Acaconda. The have a 5 piece sent (oven, frypan, etc) for $49. I am sure the quality is a bit average but to get a similar hillbilly setup, it will be a bout $180. Is hillbilly worth the additional $$?

Yes,

The Hillbilly is worth the extra money.
I have tried a cast iron oven, then a Bedourie (both somewhere in back of shed) and settled on the Hillbilly after a friend borrowed one for a camping trip we did together.
The Bush King (larger model) is big enough that you don't need an extention ring like the smaller 7.5l Bush Ranger model.

The shape of the lid (which can double as a fry pan) and the fitment of the handle, allowing just the lid to be lifted, or the whole lot, coupled with the veggie ring, gives the Hillbilly total flexibility. (you just need a pair of welders gloves as a worthwhile accessory)
I also always use a trivet inside the oven to keep the roast, or bread, off the bottom.

I generally use my oven with heatbeads, as I get more even and adjustable heat.

Love my Hillbilly!

G'day again 181,

Yes,

The Hillbilly is definitely worth the xtra. I think sandman has used it as much as i have. It is also very light as it is spun steel. I went for the smaller one to make it more compact, I bought the bag and it all packs away nicely, perfect for 2 to 4 people.

Cheers,
Bill

Hi 181
I can highly recommend the Hillbilly gear and their wok with the folding handle is great; it fits perfectly on our Ozpig which has to be the greatest little camping unit we have ever bought! If you need to buy any of the Hillbilly products go online to their site and order whatever you need. I have bought things for family for birthdays etc.. and it is simple. Lighter than cast iron and easy to clean! Enjoy.
Cheers!

Make one of these, economical on wood can be used to keep warm and you can cook in top and use a camp oven as well on top.

Get the stand, you can adjust the height, turn it away from the fire and put 3 - 4 things on it.

Their support is great and the ovens are brilliant. I had a big heavy cast iron oven. I thought the stainless steel would not hold enough heat to cook properly but I was wrong.

I love it.

I ahve the 7.5 litre camp oven with the extension ring & vegie tray & find it more than adequate.
For barbequeing, I far prefer the Biji Barbi as it's easy to use compact to carry & if necessary, fits perfectly over one of the 'disposable' cheap gas stoves.

Hi Guys,

Picked up a Hillbilly folding BBQ. It got a good workout over the weekend and I was really impressed. Cooks well and very easy to clean.

I would highly recommend.

Also grabbed a Husky 236 chainsaw. On sale at the moment for $299.
