Morning All,
We recently got home from a week long trip in our van which we got 24 hrs before leaving and was asked a very strange question.

Was out the front of our rig watching the kiddies ride their scooters and a lady from an older generation stopped for what i thought was a quick hello and said "Very nice van, did you hire it or borrow it from your parents?" I corrected her and informed her the van was ours and she turned her nose up and walked away. Is there an age limit we dont know about to own a good quality nice van??

Thats all

Cheers
JG

I am in total agreement with David & Michelle and Fab72. You could add to that she was also saying, "We are paying off the pub and living on takeaways and you are saving to enjoy yourselves!"

Young family with a new van, in 95% of cases the old duck would probably have been right but you sure deflated her tyres by being the exception to the rule :-) Would have been interesting to hear where the discussion would have gone if it was on loan from your folks?
I borrow my old mans van now & again just like he borrowed his father in laws van. Who in their right mind would buy a van anyway to use once or twice a year when you can utilize one that would otherwise sit idle in the shed.
Cheers Craig.....

JG- perhaps her question to you was not so much that she thought you too young to own your caravan, but because you only took delivery of it 1 day before setting out. doc.

Ya know, I've got a weird sense of humour.
What that women said sounds like something I might say in a particular situation.
Ask or say something silly to get a chat going, Annee says I do that all the time..........
We don't know what lead to the chat, if there was anything said earlier.
It sounds a little more 'silly' rather than rude, but as I said, I've got a weird sense of humour.

I doubt I would be stressing over it either way.

We had a similar experience when parked at a roadhouse we over heard on the UHF the transport convoy pilot comment on our caravan and tug saying " gee that's a nice looking rig"....which bought an instant response from one of the truckies " yep, they have spent the kid's inheritance."

We weren't prepared for his response nor the tone of his voice as if he was accusing us of belonging to the selfish baby boomer generation.

But we love all our children and there will be still plenty left for them....no we haven't spent it all, just blessed that we have it and can do it and live the dream.

"the selfish baby boomer generation"

Don't get put off by that populist hype. Baby boomers have every right to spend their money as they see fit and not have to justify it to the "we want everything now without having to work for it" members of the X and Y generations etc.

Yes, I belong to the SKI Club. I'm teaching my 20 and 18 year old to fend for themselves. When we go away they have to adjust, shop, feed and clean for themselves. KIds are staying home longer these days and so we have decided if their not flying the coupe, we are. Plan to do as much travelling as we can while we can. And I don't feel guilty.

Hi gramps,
Thanx for your inaccurite out look on us generation x people.
Just so you know i do not want everything now and i am willing to work hard for it. If i do 50hrs a week at work i have had a good week. I understand what you are saying, but we are not all the same.
I agree with you that b/b can spend their money on what they want, they worked for it but it bleep s me when you get a young family like myself who works hard getting insulted by the older generation.

I also know that not all oldies are like the above mentioned cause 3 years ago i left work and done a lap of the island with the family and met some wonderful people that missed their own grandkids and were quite happy to use ours as a substitute.

Hi JG,
Not for 1 minute do I think that gen x are not willing to work or make there own way in life. Actually I believe it's a lot harder, most have to stay longer in education to achieve the qualifications needed to get a well paying job. If they are lucky they will have parents that can support them in achieving this. No insult was intended towards you as it was as spin off from Redbakks comments. lighten up mate and stop taking things so seriously. We all have the right to do as we please without being judged.

Cheers and have a good day.

JG,

"Thanx for your inaccurite out look on us generation x people"

Now you're just being silly. I wrote

"Baby boomers have every right to spend their money as they see fit and not have to justify it to the "we want everything now without having to work for it" members of the X and Y generations etc."

Note the use of "members of". I did'nt say all of either X or Y generations and I did'nt mention you at all.

It looks very much like you do have a tendency to overreact or misinterpret the written and/or spoken word.

Not quite the same, but back in the early 70's, I hadn't long moved into my first house, and someone knocked at the door. When I answered, he asked if my Dad was home. I said, no, it's my place. He then had the cheek to ask if I was renting. No, it's mine and the bank's.
Somehow he thought a guy in his 20's shouldn't be living in that suburb!

cheers,
Gerry

Had a similar thing in the seventies. Working 50 odd hours a week and bought a nice boat. In a servo getting petrol and an old guy next to me says to me sarcastically, " gee it must be good to be rich" I just said, "yeh it's not bad thanks". Some people just don't think. Cheers,Bob

A couple of comments....

regarding "selfish" baby boomers (I'm one of 'em). We drove into Barron Gorge today near Cairns and one car with 3 20-somethings in it parked in a no parking zone and then expected us to stop our driving away manouvre so that their walk from the car wouldn't be interrupted. I think it's the Gen Ys that are selfish little prix. Their personal mantra is: it's all about me. You know the ones, they look upon Dad as a wallet on legs.

By the way, what happens when we get to Gen Z? Is that it for the human race, just because there aren't any more letters left?

As far as obviously expensive assets go, we get the same comment about our van. My answer is: you don't see many hearses towing trailers !!

That usually keeps the conversation light hearted.

I'm glad I ain't too scared to be lazy

G/Day GB

I agree

I don't understand were Baby Boomers are tarred with the same brush.

With the SELFISH tag.

This Baby Boomer worked 6 and a half days a week 12 hours a day.

I didn't see my kids grow up, the Cook took care of that.

Never got a hand out from the govt.

Our kids never ever wanted for anything.

They got good educations.

They both have great jobs ect, and don't get hand outs from the govt.

When we retire in December we will be Self Funded.

And there are a lot of Baby Boomers that are in the same position as us.

Any body who says Baby Boomers are selfish are Boofheads.

Hi Just goin,
It happens all the time, some people just don't like other people working hard and getting things, they think it must have been handed to them. A few years ago I rand a caravan dealership and asked for a quote on a new off road jayco that had bunks and was told don't waste his time as nobody with children could afford a new van. My reply was OK and hung up. We often get rude digs about our van especially from the person that I drive to work, I just shut up and drive. We worked hard and didnt waste our money so tuff to them'barb

Yeah Barb no where your coming from. I went to buy a brand new vehicle when I was just 17, had been working since I left school payed $30 board (cough cough) and was pulling in good money working 6 some times 7 days a week on cranes mostly 12h days. I went to a yard sat in the car and thought yep this will do me (23 grand) when all of a sudden sales man told me to get out its not a toy, got his name told hime to get ###### and drove off in my $800 piece of crap, went to another holden dealership bought the same vehicle brand new and when i picked it up I drove straight to the other dealer who told me to get out of the car, went up to him and said his name, i pointed to the new car parked in the driveway and told him what I thought of him and told him he also lost a deal with my old man, also informed the new car sales manager while I was there. Wife and I have both stopped smoking has only been 3 and a bit months but wow what a difference it makes to the bank balance. At the end of the day its no ones business, when I was at home I had/owned boat, 2 road bikes, 2 cars, camper trailer and was always updating and had the best of everything $30 a week board why not, man has that changed since getting married and now have a 3 year old lol only kidding, wouldnt change a thing. although some more $$$ would be handy to upgrade the prado lol and get another camper/Jayco...............................

I really do think some of us are taking some of those comments a little too seriously.

Have we not all had a 'dig' at someone for something at some stage ?

Why knock ya day into a hole simply 'cos someone made a comment ?
