Have been reading previous threads re dirty diesel fuel in CRD's and the accompanying horror stories and am considering the installation of an additional prefilter on my Hilux.
Given that I'm about to undertake a 14,000km trip around Australia and may have to use drum fuel and fuel from low volume outlets, has anyone any thoughts/info on the installation of an additional filter?
If advice is positive on installation of prefilter, does anyone have a recommendation to carry out the work in the
Perth (Eastern suburbs) area?
Vehicle is 2010 Hilux 4x4 T/D EC/CC M/T.

My brother fitted an extra water trap with an alarm to his Dmax. If you add and extra filter I believe it may void your warranty as this alone can cause pump damage.

I have a common rail diesel and have intstalled a
Water Watch alarm system and it has proven to be
well worth the approximate $500 cost. I've so far picked up 2 x contaminated diesel....one in Kempsey, the other in
Canberra....and thankfully no damage has been done to the engine due to the effectiveness of Water Watch. I am a bit paranoid when it comes to contaminated fuel and when filling away from my usual servo I also run the first 15 or so litres through a
Mr Funnel Filter.
Can be a bit of a PITA and you will have to run the funnel in conjunction with a jerry or make an adapter for it to fit your fuel tank filler but given the cost of CRDI repairs it is worthwhile IMHO.

From what I understand the CRD require about 45 to 60 litres per minute flow rate through the fuel filter. Your standard after market filters like the CAV filter are only rated at 40l/m. This drop in fuel pressure has been linked to overheating and failure of the fuel pump which has to draw/suck the fuel and failure of the fuel injection system with low fuel pressure.
Hopefully you would be getting warning signs from you dash first and an error code maybe even go into limp mode before any major damage could occur.
I am in full agreement that many times the fuel supply in Australia is below par and the cost of repairs to CRD is shocking to the wallet.
I too am keeping my eye out for some way to safe guard my system against dirty fuel but not compromise the system.

You can use the Delphi HDF 296 with water trap filter assembley, 40L/m is anmple for a D4D Hilux.

Bit of a noob question but won't an aftermarket Water Trap only trap water, and not dirt/sediment etc?
I know some filter housings come with water traps but it's a secondary function to the filter.

DingoBlue why don't you join the Hilux
forum at www.newhilux.net it doesn't cost anything and there are a number of threads on just this subject. Whilst pre-filter queries can be common to most makes of CRD's there is still lots of Hilux specific info.

A mate of
mine owns a mechanical
shop in Queanbeyan (near
Canberra) and he recommends the water trap filter system from
Cooma Diesel Service. He is a Toyota mechanic with decades of experience and with the fickle nature of CRD's he reckons they are a must. Quite a few of his customers have fitted them, when you consider the cost of the injectors (or rebuilds) of these motors it's a cheap alternative.

Hi there I have been using a racor filter for a few years on my 2008 t/d d4d hilux. Its fitted before the factory one on the drivers side. I get small amounts of water in the trap every second change or so and i change the factory filter every 10000ks also. Never had any problems with limp mode or any other problems a heap of mates all use them also.
cheers
