Does anyone know of a place that will replace the 'convex' type side mirrors on a new Colarado, to the standard type of Mirror glass, would prefer someone in the Geelong Vic region, or the western suburbs of Melbourne, thanks dazren

I am thinking about changing them myself, make a template up and take it to a glass place then sikaflex them over the top of the originals , I did it about 10 years ago on a big transit van I had ,worked a treat , I find them bloody annoying and painful especially when reversing, I used to drive trucks a long time ago and mirrors are your best friends, but not now .
I am sure someone on this forum will tell us why car makers changed them and how illegal it is.

Edwin,
They have become common place because...
a/ New vehicles seems to have more blind spots, and
b/ Drivers are becoming too lazy to check their blind spots by turning their head.

Your suggestion is a winner. Any glazier should be able to cut a piece of mirror to suit.

Hi Guys,

Got mine done about 6 months ago at Instant Windscreens.
Cost was about $70 per mirror and I had both sides done.
I Installed a cheap stick on mini circular mirror to regain the wide angle view down the left side and I am oh so happy with the result.

By the way,

The installer actually breaks the original glass then installs the new flat mirror glass in the original housing.

There is a bloke in the Eastern suburbs of Melb. that does the c/o mirrors on site.
I'll get his name and phone number tomorrow or the easier alternative, local glazier with your template, and a tube of silicon.

Unless the glass has a vinyl coated back surface, make sure the silicone is a neutral cure / non-acid cure silicone as used for plumbing work. Acid cure ( window and glass) will deteriorate the silvering.

Bought a Colorado a couple of weeks ago, and am still trying to get used to that driver's side mirror. Why do they do it?
OK, it seems to eliminate the blind spot that has long been a problem on my Magna, BUT vehicles in the mirror are a lot closer than they seem and that can be a safety worry. I will be looking into "ordinary" mirror glass. At least then I know what's going on!

I don't remember which car it was but the drivers side was the distorted one & the passenger side was flat. I guess that is because the mirrors are made for left hand drive vehicles.

I agree why do they do it , in a ute if you can't see out the back window it makes it hard to back into parks & merge into traffic .I went to misty dealer to see if I could buy a flat mirror for the triton ,the guy said that they could'nt legally sell me one .
I was told that most glassies & picture framers can cut mirrors glass .
cheers nick
