Hi,

Recently fitted a full 3" exhaust with high flow Cat and noticing fuel usage is greater then previous.

Before fitting exhaust mixed city and highway usage I was getting an average of 9L/100 Klms

After exhaust fitted driving pattern exactly the same but now around 11L/100 Klms.

I'm concerned when Caravan hitched up fuel use will go out the window.

Turbo is virtually spinning up even with feather touch on loud pedal.

Is this higher fuel usage expected, I understood one would expect some fuel saving over standard system?

I also have a DP chip ready to install but waiting to understand what 3" exhaust is doing before I fit the chip.

Sure your not booting it harder so you can hear the sweet sound of the exhaust burbling and the whistle form the turbo lol.............

just for your info I have carried the same mods to Toyota Hylux, 100series, and now 79series V8 and always used Taipan exhaust with my DP chip and always end up better fuel consumption.

I'd have to agree with AJC here. I fitted a chip and 3" Taipan to my 79 and have found an overall decrease in fuel consumption. Not as significant as I'd have liked but I am also driving harder as it now pulls like a V8 should. There is however a significant difference where the slower 4x4 work is concerned with much higher km per litre being achieved. My early figures show an increase of at least 15% and more likely 20%. Couldn't be more happy, especially with the increase in sheer performance of the vehicle.

Cheers Mick

9L/100kms for mixed city/highway sounds almost too good to be true.
Typical figures I've seen from mine, and they seem to match with many other owners, are 10L/100km on highway (unloaded/not towing) and 14L/100km purely city driving. I usually get around 13L/100km with a mix (mostly city).

I'd be extremely happy with 11L/100km myself!!

Chisel, your figures are exactly what my uncle gets out of his 100 factory turbo, it jumps to around 15/17 average when he's towing his 21/22 foot van.........

So does mine No difference at all except for a bit more grunt.

Coffs to Brisbane and return 10.4l L per 100k with about 100kg of gear in the back travelling at speed limit.
Towed a 2850kg van for 50,000km and averaged 17.5L per 100km

Has a 3" Beaudesert mandrel exhaust and a Safari Chip.

Dyno figures were standard 145hp at wheeels chip & exhaust 165.6hp

Should also say I fitted an EGT and it sits at 325deg solo and towing in wth at 90kph.

Drop it into 5th and temp goes up over 400deg immediatley on a flat road.

Why because revs drop below optimum and it lugs and overfuels and that causes heat.

Along with your extra fuel use, have you noticed an increase in power and acceleration?

I have sacrificed economy for increased power etc after installing my turbo,
But the power and acceleration gains were worth it.

BUT one thing you must watch is EGT's when you hook up your van and start towing....be careful.

I have fitted exhausts and chips to 3 vehicles and not one has produced better economy results. Two landcruisers were my own vehicles, the stx belongs to a mate.
Chips were on

100 Series factory turbo, manta full 3" including dump pipe replacement
STX Navara, 2 1/2" Beaudesert exhaust and Steinbauer chip
factroy turbo landcruiser ute had the 3" dtronic chip

All had full dump pipe replacement systems

All vehicles had increases in powe but added around 2L/100 in fuel consumption

I hear stories of better economy, unfortunatley there is not one person I personally know who has better economy

No its not my driving style....

Hi,
Thanks all for your responses and information.

I'll run without chip for another week or so to get around a months fuel usage then fit chip for comparison.

My purpose for doing the mods was purely for increase in power/torque for my new 3000Kg Van and hoped for some better fuel economy.

I believe as the exhaust gases are able to flow more freely turbo is spooling up earlier even with feather touch of accelerator.

I'm happy with improved "Tuned" note from exhaust even for an old codger like me, I sold the idea of Chip and exhaust to "She who must be obeyed" on fact I'd get better fuel economy so my story at the moment is it needs bedding in before economy improves.
