Hi All,

Just wondering if there is any water at Level Post Bay on Lake Eyre yet ?
I spoke to my mate Trevor at Muloorina Station but as he does not get out there much these days he did not know.
Can somebody inform me of the water in the bay Please. Thank you. Cheers

There was no water there when we flew over about two weeks ago. I understand that none is expected this year. Not enough water coming down the various creeks into Lake Eyre North. Any water in Lake Eyre South is from local rainfall via the streams that run into it.

We were out there about 23rd June, and water was a few km out from the edge. You could see it, but was a bit disappointing not to have it closer. As we ran out of time, didn't go round to Halligan Bay either.

Don't know how much differnce the Cooper water would make the the Lake's level, but with the SE winds blowing, the water is unlikely to be close to Level Post lookout.

We were told that campiing was taboo at the Bay, and after seeing the sand ridges there, didn't really worry us. Had a good camp at Muloorina anyway.

Hi Bob,

Know exactly what you are saying, they are expecting a little more water in a few weeks time from the Cooper but it may not happen. Will need a good northerly to push the water into Level Post.
About camping out there, well yeh not good ! I have spent a quite a few nights between the North and South lakes as I worked at Muloorina Station as a station hand in th 60's.

The camp site on the bank of the Frome River at Muloorina Homestead is a good spot. I spend a bit of time up now and again. The old saying; "You can take the boy from the bush, but you can't take the bush from the boy" applys to me.

Was there 2 1/2 weeks ago. Could see water glistening in the distance. Walked about half way to it - probably 1.5 km - before the mud got deeper. Looks like the water had been there a few days earlier when there was a north wind but with the SW wind it had retreated. Wet enough that water seeped into footprints behind us.

We were at level Post Bay at the end of June - just when the Cooper crossed the Birdsville Track.
The water was about 2ks from the shore and it was coming in at faster than a metre a minute - we walked out and it was only muddy right at the water. The northerly wind on the shallow water was the culprit apparently and it was clear the water had been higher with drowned rats and a couple of lambs etc on the salt flats. Great sunset over the water Our Blog - Level Post Bay
Last 20ks or so on the track were a little ordinary but not as bad as the track to Halligan bay.
Given the choice I would certainly trip to Level Post Bay rather than Halligan - although you can camp at the latter. Hardly any birds at Level Post and only a few Pelicans (but lots of Seagulls) at Halligan.

Hello

Pic below is Halligan Bay on the 18 July 2011. Observed Pelicans and Silver Gulls but also Banded Stilts, Black-winged Stilts, Red-necked Avocets, Red Capped Plovers, Whiskered Terns, Grebes (Little Aus or Hoary-headed - to far out to see) and Grey Teal. Track in was fine - suitable for 2wd with caution.

I sent one final shout after him to stick to the track, to which he replied “All right,” That was the last ever seen of Gibson - E Giles 23 April 1874

Thanks to all for replies. Looks like I keep in touch with Muloorina for a while and just wait. It would be nice to see it like it was in 1974 when it was about 1 foot at Cambell's causeway. Nice photo of Halligans Greg.
