Hi all,
I've just bought a new patrol and I'm not sure about locking the free wheeling hubs. On my old GQ there was a switch on each of the front wheels. The new wheels seem to have a nut. Why have they done this?

James, if you draw a straight line with a texta across the hex nut in 2WD then engage 4WD you should be able the line you've drawn point a different direction I believe.

the hubs should have the option of auto & locked
1) auto just put in 4wd & they will lock in & to unlock just back up for a few meters & they unlock (you can hear them click out)
2) to lock hubs use wheel brace & turn to lock

Auto is fine for most 4wd but if its hard your better to lock them as some times they will unlock & then lock back in when in reverse & in a lot of conditions you do not want this to happen

hope this helps

All explained in the handbook and on the sticker above the driver's side internal sun visor :-) I had a problem with mine in auto - they would infrequently but sometimes in the most inopportune times (ie exiting Gunshot) unlock - usually only on one side. I replaced them with a set of AVM manual hubs but the GQ hubs will also bolt directly in. I just couldn't get a set of GQ hubs and I wasn't about to pay what Nissan were asking for a set of OEM hubs.

As Vince says James , you only have auto lock or fully locked options now whereas previously in the GQ's you could have a fully unlocked position and the car would never go into 4wd in this mode.
This was handy for using low range on bitumen to say, slowly back a van etc.

With the new senario it would go into 4wd so you can't use low range on bitumen.

I have to admit though , that I think the new way is near perfect and only ever use mine in the "Auto" position.

After being in 4wd , put car into high range and reverse up 2m.
You will hear clicks as it disengages 4wd mode.

If left accidently in Locked mode when back in high range on a highway you can hear a noticeable increase in a rumbling / drone type noise which is caused by the engaged axles spining even though its in 2wd.

Robin
If your getting a rumbling something is not right. In mind the only thing you will notice is the fuel consumption

I agree with Robin M, Vince, you can definately hear a rumble/ drone if fronts are in on hard surfaces.
