Some regionalisation thing that we (Australia) do. I notice the newer units seem to be using the factory locations though?

Hi onenut59,

Has to do with the fitment of a spare tyre carrier to the rear of vehicles.

Rear lights (tail, indicator and brake) must be visible from the sides, not possible with a spare mounted on the rear doors.

It is odd though that Prado's, Rav4, Kluger and some other brands have the lights operating on the body. Bob.

The reason only dummy lights are fitted for the AUS market is the the spare wheel mounting position prevents the geometric visibility requirements of ADR13 being met i.e. the rear lights must be visible from 45 degrees inwards & 80 degrees to the sides. You can buy the original lamps to replace the dummies from a Nissan dealer for about $250.00 per side. In other markets they do fit the proper lights. The wiring is already installed to the left side, just run your hand back up the loom & you will feel a spare plug taped to the loom. The wiring for the right indicator is on the RHS. You just have to run wiring from the LHS to the RHS for the stop/tail & reverse lamp. I found the best way was up the LR rear pillar, across the where roof behind the roof lining & down the RH pillar. A piece of fencing wire passed through first & tie your new wiring to the fence wire & pull it through. That way you do not have a lump under the carpet where the wiring would go & you don't have to make a hole to exit the interior, go under the floor then make another hole to enter the interior again on the RHS. Then you will have 5 stop lamps, 4 tail & indicators & 2 reverse lamps.

It does have something to do with the Aust Design Standards...requiring all rear lights to be visible from a 45 degree angle or something similar....there is also something about the number of lights operating but not to sure on that one...it always made me wonder why the Holden (Isuzu) Jackaroo had the vertical lights & horizontal lights all working....so they had 4 brake lighs & one in the rear door made 5 & 4 T/lights working!! Oh they also have two reversing lights....Nissan only have one reversing light bad design!!!! In the earlier models Nissan advertised 40 litre sub tank.....well like your model it may hold 31.89 litres Then there was the design problem with the first of the 3 litre motors...maybe not enough oil....someone suggested that Nissan put on a bigger sump....hmmmm If you read the part carefully about auto hubs...make sure you understand it because there are many Patrol owners out there who don't.....Mitsubishi ceased making 4 W/Drives with auto hubs many moons ago!!

The reason for the one reversing light is a hold over from Left Hand drive vehicles which only had it on that side.
My VW is the same as are a lot of other cars that come from LHD countries

That ADR is a "croc of schyte !".

All it has done is allow the manufacturers to cut costs.

Anything that makes a vehicle safer, should be used.
By the way I have mine done, and I used the twin reversing light ones too..

By the way, solder them in, do not use those scotch locks, as they will cause nothing but trouble

Cheers

I have had the Bulbs installed on our recently traded 2008 and our new 2010 patrols.

Our Auto Electrician done the installation on both vehicles.

He charged us $125-00 per vehicle.

Most Auto Electricians do the job, it's fairly common.

I think "Q" from the Bond Movies works at the Nissan Factory too because they have the eye watering fumes and try to disappear in the black cloud up the hills. Glad to have the grunt to go around. :-)
