toyota coaster motorhome

good evening all we are thinking of buying a mid 90s coaster and turning it into a motor home
this is where im getting confused thers heaps for sale and they say they can be driven on a normal car licence (im in vic ans theres vic ads)a normal licence allows you to drive up to 4500kg gvm but a coaster has a gvm of 4990kg.
can you downgrade a gvm or are all the adds fibbing.

Some have been downgraded to 4490kg and two seats when in motorhome guise and then can be driven on a car licence. Some states like NSW will not accept the downgraded GVM unless it is a grey import.
Be wary though with an aircon version and a full fitout inc extra fuel tanks there is not much load capacity with a 4490 gvm.

should also be able to register them as a mobile caravan and not have to pay comercail vehicle rates
- personally i would look round for one already done

Might be easier to just upgrade your lic to light truck, plus you never now when it will comer in handy.

Yes 4500kg is the magic number,need to stay below this. Not sure about other states but in WA you need to re register the vehicle as a motorhome and get it weighed
