Fraser Island

We are planning to go to Fraser Island in Oct 2011 with an off road camp trailer. Thinking of coming on the barge from Hervey Bay to Kingfisher Bay. Does anyone know what the road condition is like coming off the barge and over to the east coast. Is it hard going towing the trailer? Any thoughts - never been to Fraser.

Hi Annette,
No problems getting off the barge you drive along the jetty directly into Kingfisher Resort.
The track across the island changes overnight, it is basically a 4WD track that is maintained and some of the steeper hills have been fortified with timber of chip.

If you have a vehicle and trailer with good clearance you will have no trouble getting across.

Yes, agree with Kev. The only issue on the inland tracks is having to pass vehicles coming in the opposite direction. Getting off the track or reversing is not so easy with a trailer. Particularly if you encounter one of the 4WD busses as they are quite assertive and expect you to yield. Do not be intimidated and take your time in accommodating their demands.

Some of the tracks also have deep wheel ruts but most people cope OK.

Great place..... have a great time.

Cheers

Tks guys for the input. Our Prado is stock standard with a gas tank underneath so hope the clearance will be OK.

Is there a specific reason you want to come onto the island from the King fisher side?
Where are you planning to camp?
I haven't been to Fraser since 2006, but took our Tambo camper when we were there last. As the guys have mentioned conditions on the inland tracks do change a lot , but when we were there, without doubt the road across from Kingfisher was the worst we found, with large holes cut out by the huge tires of the resort buses.

Unless I had a good reason to take a trailer to the Kingfisher bay side, my preference would be come onto the island from Rainbow Beach (via Hook point) and drive up the eastern beach to your destination, then explore the inland tracks with out the trailer making life harder.

Keep an eye out HERE as your trip gets closer. That should help you get an idea of current conditions on the island.

Obviously you would want to watch the tide times and drive close to low tide if you can.

You will LOVE Fraser, is a truly wonderful place..

I tend to agree with Bytemrk.

We were on Fraser in September 2008 with our Trak Shak. I will take that thing anywhere and while I would have no problems driving across the island from Kingfisher it is just that much easier up the eastern beach.

Oh and do yourself a favour, let your tyres down, car and trailer. I came across heaps of stock standard Prados bogged where they need not have been because they would not let tyres down.

I even doug one guy out letting his tyres down I explained the value of lower pressures and demonstrated it in the way he got out of the bog. Half an hour later I was eating ice cream at a shop and noticed this guy pumping his tyres up at the servo. Next time I say him bogged I drove past.

Fraser is great. Do plenty of reading before you go, follow directions from rangers when you are there and you will have a great time.

Tks guys. Appreciate the input. Slideshow was great. Have done some sand driving so understand that letting tyre pressure down is essential.

See ya
