Hi All,

Just a question in regards to a new swag I just bought. It's a Jolly Swag Shiralee which has 15oz canvas sides and 17oz canvas base. Swag

The ticket thing attached to the swag says it does not require wetting down prior to use. However, I've read in a few places that you should wet canvas down prior to using it to seal it.

So what should I do? I've got it as I'm heading to Cape York next Sunday (9 days away!!!).

Cheers,

Jono

I would set it up and if not raining and hose it like it was raining .
Have a look inside and see .
If water gets in you will know that it needs wetting down and do it again.

Why would they bother to put the instruction not to, if that wasn't the case?
If for some reason you don't trust them, then wet it down.

I've had that particular model for over 20 years. Never "seasoned" it and it has never leaked a drop. Great,no frills swag. They are made of proper canvas, not rip-stop rubbish. Highly recommended. Cheers Phil.

Jono,

Don't sweat it mate.
Just use it as is. If you are swagging it out in the "elements" and it rains, the chances are you will remain dry.
On the off chance that a slight leak develops, the wet canvas will swell up and close the leak.

I believe swags are a little different to a largish tent.
Having said that, I never "christened" our Oztent down before using it and have never experienced a problem with leaks during a downpour.

I have had the Shiralee king size single for six years and I have never "seasoned" it and I have laid out in the rain on a few occasions and it has never leaked. It is a great swag. I added an egg shell mattress and a woollen underlay and it is warm and comfortable. I have slept in it for months at a time and I sleep very, very well.

I soaked mine in the bath, let it dry, then hosed it a couple of times -to be sure to be sure, best to not get soaked and have a miserable time. On another note I take a decent piece of shade cloth to lay under my swag to control the dirt as I step in - not black plastic as when it rains it creates a swimming pool as one of our party found out.
