The benefit of Diff Locks

Hi all

This recent trip brought home the good thing about diff locks.

I got into a bog when my boat trailer pulled the rear of the car off line and into those impossibly deep wheel ruts, thus rear diff bottomed out.

Front right wheel still had traction & a diff lock. So with a bit of back and forward we pulled out with out going to greater bother.

In the photo you will notice the diff drag mark and the hill of mud left at each little gain of distance by doing the forward and reverse tactic. The LHS wheels were not touching bottom.

So a good thing to have when you are remote not expecting to see many people.

Hi Tony,

Are you sure it wasn't just the unbelievable 4wdriveability of your Rodeo? They've been awarded the worlds best 4wd tag every year for the past decade.

Cheers Wilko

Love difflocks here - but Wilko - maybe if those cars had long travel coil suspension they might not get into trouble so much ?

How exactly is 'long travel coil suspension' going to help when the diffs on the ground?

Hi Guys

That was a fun reply but there is truth in it , the Rodeo's have relativiely poor articulation and longer travel increases the pressure the spining wheels have on the ground. Tracks like this are not a hard solid surface , and the diff hubs sit in ooze taking just part of the load.

Wilko - They are an adequate 4 x 4 thats for sure, but way too low to the ground :-)

Those Cruisers with the big lift and tyres are just too much for my little car.

I put it down to the diff locks as there is no way I should have pulled out of that any other way

GBC - Yes a lucky save :-) To think I have a 3" lift and 1" more in the tyres and I am still lower than a standard cruiser :-)

Tony, I notice that you give no information as to where you were fishing, must be a good spot I reckon.

yeah diff locks are good but..... i have f & r lockers on my cruiser but no matter what we have a drive that leads up to the back of our property that it will not climb. wheels spin galore but no advance. we also have an adventra with ESP and traction control, blow me down it climbs it on road tyres with no effort! i was challenged and razzed that it couldnt do it and i was scepticle at the start too but it surprised me. so if it came to lockers or trac? give me trac ;))

I definately agree. I have a Jeep Grand and a Freelander 2. The FL2 with its magic traction system will go where the Grand gets stuck much to my surprise. The Disco 3 &4 have the same system and I have seen them do amazing stuff stock standard on road tyres. Mike

I am also of the opinion that in some specific cases Difflocks - or MT's can actually make things worse - but summed overall are the best.

Have taken on quite a few cars in the past , and one funny experience we had was with a traction controlled Kluger we were given.

Went up a slippery muddy more or less flat road much safer than my Patrol and then came to a side dirt road that split off from the main 2wd dirt road.

There was a normal drain at the junction which created the need for some articulation and the silly Kluger got stuck right there.

Highly embrassing.

You could feel its traction control chopping in and out but just wouldn't move.

This was up in Dandenongs , not far from home , and after we pushed the car out we went and got the Patrol with no lockers etc and drove calmly and quitely thru as all 4 wheels remained on the ground.

Later that night we returned with the Kluger and drove faster letting momentum carry us across the drain , but it was quite a stunner really.
