Does anyone have any experience changing the OEM halogen lights to HID? Secondly, I've been unable to find an ARB, TJM, ECM nudge bar on which to mount spotties for same vehicle - any (constructive) thoughts?

That should read ECB, not ECM.

Apparently the vehicle must have self levelling suspension & headlight washers for an HID conversion to be legal.

Shaker

Bi-Xenon is an OEM new vehicle option ($$$$$). It has washers, but is not self levelling.

You don't need either of the above for a high beam conversion, just low beam.
Have a look at U.S. ebay sites - there's plenty to choose from.

Can you point us to the statute that says that.

My new VW has Bi Xenon and has both washers and is self levelling.

One reason HID bulbs arent allowed is that the focal length of the bulb is different to standard and so they dont focus the light correctly and tend to flare.

The rule as far as I can make out says they can only be fitted to vehicles that offer them as standard in one of their models and must have washers and self levellers.
Doesnt differentiate between dip or main beams

Not that it seems to worry some.

Usually the only people it worries are the one's coming the other direction.

It would be good if some of the rules regarding lights were enforced.

It's not up to me to have to sift through the relevant ADRs, although I think 46 & 51 may be good start. All I have tried to do is warn that there certain parameters that have to be met before fitting HID kits.

Australian Design Rule 13/00 – Installation of Lighting and Light Signalling Devices on other than L-Group Vehicles

6.2.9.Other requirements

The requirements of paragraph 5.5.2. shall not apply to dipped-beam headlamps. Dipped-beam headlamps shall not swivel according to the angle of lock of steering. Dipped-beam headlamps with gas-discharge light sources shall only be permitted in conjunction with the installation of headlamp cleaning device(s) according to Regulation No. 45. In addition, with respect to vertical inclination, the provision of paragraph 6.2.6.2.2. shall not be applied when these headlamps are installed. blah blah blah

I'll find more, but basically it states 'dipped beam headliamps require self levelling and washers'.

High beams aren't meant to be pointed at other drivers so they are exempt.

I would be extremely careful however retrofitting hid to a high beam for driving on highways where they are turned off an on a bit, as hid lamps degrade quickly doing this.

My subaru tribeca for example, has hid low beams and halogen high beams, specifically because halogen copes better with being switched on and off all night long.

7. MODIFICATIONS AND EXTENSION OF APPROVAL OF THE VEHICLE TYPE OR OF THE INSTALLATION OF ITS LIGHTING AND LIGHT-SIGNALLING DEVICES

7.1. Every modification of the vehicle type, or of the installation of its lighting or light-signalling devices, or of the list referred to in paragraph 3.2.2. above, shall be notified to the Administrative Department which approved that vehicle type. The department may then either:

7.1.1. Consider that the modifications made are unlikely to have an appreciable adverse effect and that in any case the vehicle still meets the requirements; or

7.1.2. Require a further test report from the Technical Services responsible for conducting the tests.

7.2. Confirmation of extension or refusal of approval, specifying the alteration, shall be communicated by the procedure specified in paragraph 4.3. above to the Parties to the Agreement applying this Regulation.

7.3. The Competent Authority issuing the extension of approval shall assign a series number for such an extension and inform thereof the other Parties to the 1958 Agreement applying this Regulation by means of a communication form conforming to the model in Annex 1 to this Regulation.

Bummer,

I also read that 'passing' lights (high beam) must also be self levelling and have washers, so it looks like we've all learned something today.

I was researching putting in hid high beams into the vehicle mentioned before, and had it 'on good authority' that I could. I shall be having a chat with the good authority who was selling the kit in the morning.

HIDs:-

DO require headlight washers.

DO require appropriate reflector optics.

DO NOT require automatic leveling headlights. However, levelers if fitted must have certain characteristics.

As a rule most older vehicles will not have the correct optics, eg reflectors for H4, H1 bulbs etc. However some newer vehicles do have 9005 / 9006 or similar bulbs in combination with the correct reflectors which are compatible with HID or Halogen. For example a Landcruiser 200 has *identical* reflectors for HID and Halogen options.

I should say

......For example a Landcruiser 200 has *identical* reflectors for HID and Halogen options. Adding that the HID option is not available in Australia at the moment.
