Hope i am not off-topic but will share my days little venture out n about ....
We drove to Hells Gate to catch up with Bill & Lee, have not caught up since before the wet so was good to see them again, Bill is recovering from "treatment" so has not been well at all.. Bill gave us a mud map to see some rock paintings and an old burial site, we took the kids up there and looked at the rock paintings but left the site alone, will need "permission" for that one.... we then drove over into the NT to Red Bank mine site to see Mathersons Cave, it is closed from tourists as it is not "structurally" safe at the moment, we met up with one of the guys and are going back out there in a few weeks for lunch, some business, and we get to see the caves, kids will love that trip, we called back in at Hells Gate for a cuppa n smoke on the way back and home by 7-30 ...
Really nice day, kids tired and in bed... love our back yard

Hi Joe, As you were exploring Oz I would suggest you are spot on topic.

Sounds like a great day was had by all.
I remember as a kid that when you got home, after a day out, tired and were looking to getting to bed it had been a really good day. I especially liked falling asleep in the car on the way home.

Good one, Bruce.
At home and at ease on a track that I know not and

About 300 Km round trip? Even at your fuel prices your day was way cheaper than taking the kids to Dreamworld for the day. Road conditions must be OK to allow you to do that trip as well as socialise. I grew up in the country and well remember day trips like yours. Your kids will grow up with great memories of their childhood.

dunno about that, my old 1HZ love to slurp fuel, hence i am heading down the pathway of a 1HDT ................
But YES i would rather take the kids to the rocks and bush than "Dreamworld" any day, bet they dont agree on that one eh ...

Road was really good, the section from Doomadgee about 30klms west is bad, sandy base so get chopped up with the cattle trucks, then on up to Red Bank was excellent with crews working on it in places, some crossings still flowing, gotta watch them, i hit one at about 60, missed the sign, scared the peeds out of me, glad there were no big rocks in it eh ...... and get this i did it on the way back, dont learn do i hahahha
Cheers

Hi Joe and Mel,
if you can manage to establish a contact with the Wollogorang people see if you can get their ok to try to get out to their coast. When we were at Doom, Wollogorang still ran a camp area between Tully and Massacre Inlets and we had a brilliant weekend down there. I should think the track is not so well maintained these days, but there did seem to be a muster area out there, so may be a chance.

We have already done that trip, when we were living at Doomadgee. I was suggesting that you guys try and do it, in case you did not already know about it.

Sounds like the sort of day the kids will remember a lifetime... One day they may say "remember when we all used to do these great trips in the bush!"

Keep us the useful road reports. If you hear anything re the Calvert I would value that information. I would REALLY value it!

hey John, a couple i spoke to today came accross the Calvert and it is fine, they had a camper on and had no probs at all they went through the middle also and that is "supposed" to be the deepest, it was about 600mm deep, they also heard at hells gate it was getting cleaned up today, a lot of 4wds n vans came through today so i would say it is all fine ....
Cant remember what creek, this side of the mine..... will look on map
