Hi,
I have been advised by Rhino that I can increase roof load on my vehicle to 100Kgs with a "track kit". Fitment would seem rather drastic, given the interior would need to be virtually gutted to do it. Has anyone done this. How did it go, and what cost and problems etc.
It is huge exercise for an additional 25 Kg, but is the difference between having a tinnie on the roof, and forgetting about it altogether.

Thank, Barry

Dont forget that the weight of what you put up there includes the weight of the rack and fittings.

Didnt put a rack on my vehicle cos the 41kg of it made it rather not worth while.

Sounds like a lot of work and maybe would check further rather than take a salesmans advice.

I have fitted the track kit twice to NM / NP Pajeros. It's not all that drastic and there is no need to remove the interior. You simply unclip the (outside) factory plastic trim on the roof channels, lay the new tracks down and drill the rivett holes, then rivett the tracks in place. You will need a decent rivett gun as they are quite large. Finally you cut the factory plastic trim to size to fit the front of the roof. The job should take less than an hour.

The main reason to swap from the factory mounts is that some were prone to tearing the roof hooks out when overloaded.

Pat,
Thank you for your input. I was told the headlining had to come out. Was yours fitted by an approved Rhino dealer ???? I was under the impression that the track was bolted from the underside. Do you understand that you have a rack approved for 100kg ? (Rhino tell me the standard load rating is a max of 75kg).
Thank Barry

Its all very well putting a rack on that can carry XXXX amount but not if the vehicle manufacturer specifies a lower weight.

I would have thought that as Mitsubishi rated the Pajero to carry XXX kgs on the roof that would be that unless there was additional strengthening added to the body, pillars and turret to carry the added load.
I can understand that the original factory mounts are not all that good after seeing the result of a big wind gust encountered by an owner with a small tinnie on top. The front mounts had pulled through the roof skin and made quite a mess. It is only sheet metal after all.

I've an old HJ60 Sahara with a home made roof rack supported fully along the gutters and held with 6 gutter clamps. I carry 100l of fuel and 120l water up there plus a box full of recovery gear which is probably 60-100kg. I've travelled thousands of km over some pretty rough and corrugated tracks and have never had a problem.

I would be wary of placing any extra weight on the roof of a Paj.....they are somewhat narrower than (say) a cruiser or Patrol and the COG would be adversely affected by weight on the roof.

AFAIK they are already rated to 100KG. Certainly the current model is and it's the same body.. Will have to check my manual...

I have the track system fitted and as Pat says it's no drama to do.
