Hi all,
Mates Dad has been caught out with a blown head gasket in
Coober Pedy. Dropped the car off there and continued on his trip as a passenger in another car. Obviously worried about getting ripped off so anyone know of a trustworthy mechanic in
Coober Pedy?
Should cost about $3k - $4K approx in town so always expect a bit more to be fixed up there but within reason.
Thanks,

forgot to mention it's a GQ 4.2 with aftermarket turbo. 350,000km's on the clock.

Be sure that whoever repairs the car checks for cracks in the sleeves & block behind the sleeves. I have seen several of these motors crack blocks in this area, especially if they are high mileage & fitted with an after market turbo.
Repair required boring
the block & fitting a sleeve to
the block & boring the sleeve to accept the replacement original type sleeve. Also the water pump flow rate should be checked to ascertain if coolant flow is sufficient.
Hope this is of some help,
Regards, Derek

Seriously if he has Auto club
membership (NRMA/QAA/SAA etc) then pass it onto them, they will organise repairs if possible locally and if not will ship the vehicle back to your residence/town and also kick in for travel costs.

we had a few vehicles repaired in
Coober Pedy on our trip away last year from 2 different mechanics, both went out of their way to help us and were fairly cheap we thought when it came to the final bills. i've sent of a text message to a mate to find out their names, as soon as he gets back to me i'll post them up for you.

my mate has gotten back to me and he can't remember the names of either
shop we used, and i unfortunately can't find the receipt i should have in my filing cabinet for the tax man...whoops.
sorry can't be of more help, but will say that both shops we used were reasonably priced. which surprised us alot considering the location.

that was the guy who i got my wheel bearing kits from. he stayed back after closing time and went out of his way to help get us going again, including knocking out the old wheel bearings and pressing on and packing the new ones with grease, so we could go back and fit them straight onto our fourby on the side of the road.
that's one of the 2
places i was thinking of...lol

great stuff, thanks I'll pass this on. I think the RAA has come to the rescue for the towing cost from where the drama happened so at least that's good news.
These engines are bullet proof (from a trucking business that Nissan took over many years ago I believe) but they do have issues with over heating; something that Nissan really didn't resolve. Probably a good example to everyone the advantage of aftermarket gauges.
Thanks again.
