Hi all, Son is going North soon & has a 60ltr Engel .He hasn't the room to store it in the Van so will have to leave it outside at the C/park . Question is does anyone have a way of securing these units to the van as a Anti theft Device .
ps. He cant take the Pitbull. cheers Tony N

Hi Tony
We are foced to park our 80 litre Waeco outside the van. We use a keyed bike security cable to chain it to the stairs/chassis. Will slow a thief down for a while at least.
For extended time away he could just place it inside the van until he comes back.
Cheers

We used a chain through the handles padlocked to a ring welded to the chassis.
Was also pulled over the lid so it wouldnt open.
If they want it they will get it just make it harder

Handles are fine but only held on by 4 philips screws & when these problem ones get to know your movements they know they've got a certain amount of time.also not worried about contents as much as cost for a new 60 ltr

Our proven anti theft device (we had the rear window smashed and back door opened but the fridge stayed) is to take the screws out of the feet on the bottom of the fridge (M8 x 4) and then bolt the fridge to the floor (in our case drawer slide) using M8 long bolts. This basically blots the fridge down rather then using straps around the handles and it has been proven to stop theft. Of course the fridge slide makes it easy as we just slide out the draw and install/remove the bolts to take the fridge out. You could go through the floor but it would be a little harder to install/remove the fridge but rest assured it will not be taken easily.
For a van external application as long as you have something flat to bolt it to that can be made difficult to get to the bottom you should be able to do something similiar.

As mentioned above a cable through the handles. Remove handle bolts first and replace with some loctight on the thread.
Chatting to one bloke up north he would leave a couple of bottles of beer next to his fridge as this was usually what their were after. They take the beer not the fridge. Funny thing was he would drink the beer first then relieve himself into the bottle and recap it. He never got to see the reaction but he smiled at the thought.

A simple movement alarm can be effective. (And noisey !)

He could consider replacing the handle fixing screws with special security head types - ones that require a special tool to undo - Coventry fasteners etc might advise. That would allow you to employ the handles for locking it up. The idea above re bolts from below requires a base outside the van, but it is an 'elegant solution' as they say in the classics :-o). Whatever he does do, just take it for granted that ferals will be targeting the fridge - probably only a matter of time !

If they want it they will get it no matter how big a chain and lock , big locks and chains are like an advert screaming out pick me ,pick me i'm worth stealing. Can't take the Pitbull then take the Rotty.
