Hi All ,
I'm considering getting a turbo upgrade on my 2006 TDi 42 Patrol. Fully loaded the rig weighs in at around 3.5 to 3.6t so a bit of extra puff wouldn't go astray.

If anyone has had theirs done, I would appreciate your comments, type and are you happy?

I already have a 3" Taipan exhaust system.

I've spoke to AXT in Dandenong and they have a turbo & manifold upgrade which they claim will increase power by 35% - fitted cost $3150 +gst.

Your personal experiences would be appreciated.

Cheers

Talk to Denco in Wagga. Scott there has a 4.2 GU that they have done some development on including the exhaust / turbo / injector pump and has fitted one of their water to air intercoolers. No affiliation except that Scott is a friend and previous neighbour.

Also have a chat in patrol4x4 forums - there is a fair bit of knowledge there.

Hi Alex,

For the weight you are carrying, i would be looking at a supercharger.

I have one fitted to my 92 GQ 4.2 diesel, more expensive to fit but the benefits far out weigh the dollars

At idle i am getting about 8 psi and that then translates to something a turbo can never offer.

4x4s are not racing machines.

Hi Kiwicol,
I hadn't considered a supercharger.

Alex!! You have to remember that the 4.2 TD is an old truck motor . They don't really have too much going for them other than its mechanical fuel pump, minimal electronics and reliability. I wonder if you try to get too much power out of it, you may compromise its reliability and longevity. Just a thought, regards Michael

Hi Michael,
Yes, I share your scepticism... the providers of aftermarket enhancements naturally speak of the benefits not necessarily the downsides.

On paper it looks good, but I would like to hear about people experiences after installation.

Thanks for replying

Hi Alex,

I have a couple of 4.2's and both have had turbo's upgraded by the mob in Toowoomba ( name eludes me right now). Both vehicles go like stink by 4.2 standards. Both have big k's racked up ln them since the upgrade with no long term side effects.

If you do a search on Google re turbo's and Toowoomba you will find the mob I am talking about. Worth talking to in my opinion. Also Mike Vine Turbo's in Brisbane is a wizard with the standard 4.2 turbo so give him a call too.

Regards, Trevor.

Thanks Steve that's the mob. MTQ change the internal vanes in the turbo and get more HP out of the vehicle that way, from my experience this does add significant HP but more toward the top end of the rev range. If you want more bottom end then Mike Vine is the man to speak to, he will tickle the fuel and breathing side of things maintaining the standard turbo, this will add significant bottom end compared to the MTQ option. Either way is well worth the coin in my opinion. I have had MTQ upgrade for 400thou on my green GU and 130 of the 250thou k's on my silver GU. I ended up with close on 170KW at the wheels of my green machine and isn't that fun to drive but it is all above 2000rpm.

Cheers, Trevor.

Thanks Trevor, Steve & Lorraine,
It all sounds good. I'll give them a call.
Also good tip on the bottom end option. I feel the need for extra power when it comes to climbing up sand hills and steep tracks, so now you've got me wondering ?

Thanks for your great reply
Cheers

Alex,

In my green GU I have a crawler gear which in offroad situations totally transforms the GU. This crawler gear would add way more offroad possibilities than the turbo mods could ever dream of acheiving. Bottom end HP huh!!......with a crawler gear you always have the right gear ratio to choose from to avoid having a lack of HP. Add both the crawler gear and 170HP and then you can imagine how much fun 4wding really can be hehehehe!!

Just another option you may not have thought about???? and at $1700 fitted it can be a lot cheaper than some turbo mods.

Cheers, Trevor.
