Can anyone give us info on hiring a Sat. phone for short term- say 6 to 8 weeks.
I can't justify purchasing a system & subscription for our annual outback pilgrimages.
Thanks

Our sat phone cost approx $500. It a prepaid one with 100 credits that last a couple of years.

There is a subsidy if you can qualify.

Hello wombat, You can buy outright a Global Iriudium Sat phone with an A/C with Telstra. Either pay min. amount of $30.00/month, or have A/C temp closed till you are wandering off again. ( this costs $100.00) This system works perfectly for me, same phone No. Each time I require Sat Ph. Nowdays, the person who rings you will bear the costs of Sat Call, unlike Vodafone years ago.
Iridium has cappabilities with internet, just a bit slow.

Where are you based? If near Melbourne's eastern suburbs, look up rent-a-2-way (Google it). I've hired a satphone from them before, and have booked another for July/August this year. Friendly and reliable. No affiliation.

Hi, you might like to consider buying via ebay or the like, we have just looked at the same thing and were amazed at how dear they were. Most rentals were around $100 for the first week then at least $80 a week plus call charges which I thought was a bit steep for an 8 week trip being that a new one is only about $1000. Seen them 2nd hand on ebay for around $400 outright with no contract.

Googled and there were 4-5 main rental places but only one offered post out and post back when you did not need it anymore ie. could post back from central Australia when back in civilisation.
