I have been given some extractors and a complete exhaust that appears to fit my 1 HZ powered cruiser, all in good condition
I was after some opinions on whether or not was it worth the effort done by those who have installed extractors, I not expecting huge gains I wasn't looking for them, It hasn't cost me anything, but a couple of more horses wouldn't go astray ..
Worth the effort, or take them to the tip??

if you got them for nicks then even if they dont make much difference then nothing lost. going back to the older hilux's , extractors made a noticable difference to the power so i cant see why the extractors wouldnt do the same to your old girl.
ps.....just make sure its ready for Levuka :-)))

G'day Shane,
I've read stories were some bloke have got up to 15% more Horses with a set of extractors and a sports muffler.
What are they worth new, about 500 bucks? Cheap HP if you got the whole system. Is your cruiser like the 80 were is goes over the rear chassis, and it's squashed? cause if this is opened up, it alone will make a big difference. I've never taken any notice of the exhaust on your model.
A good score I reckon.
Yeah, see at Levuka. ;)

Shane,
If the muffler is a turbo one or free flow you should gain at least half a gear on hills, certain hills that you use say 3rd gear to traverse you may find you go over in 4th.
Wack it on and see how you go.
Have a good one.

Wack em on mate, nothing to lose. I put them on a 2.4 Hilux & found a use for 5th gear..:))). Seriously ,though..cold starting improved & idled smoothly
straight away..none of that shakin & shuddering stuff. I reckon both power & fuel
use improved by 15%. cheers....oldbaz.

Extractors on a 1HZ don't make as big a difference as on some other engines particually petrols. 15% or 1/2 a gear improvement would be wishfull thinking at best unless the pump was screwed up. Need to ensure that the flexable joint just under the floor below the drivers feet is kept to avoid cracking the exhaust. Any free flowing exhaust will be louder & the drone under full load can be annoying especially for base model Cruisers with little sound deadening or if driving with the window open.
Worth it? Probably seeing you have the extracors for free as long as a slight increase in noise is acceptable. For me I didn't bother with extractors on either of my 1hz cruisers although I did fit a set to my 2H Troopy which worked exceptionally
well.
Hop onto the
lcool website if you want some further specific detail.

Thanks Craig,
I'm wondering why you feel that there was no point to fitting extractors to your 1 HZ's, but then state that extractors worked exceptional
well on a 2H.
Thanks again for tip about the flex pipe.

Hi all,
I put extractors and a free flow exhaust on my 1 HZ 80 series, and got about half a gear extra out of the motor. l could tell the difference we turning at lights and then have to go up a
hill, the difference was very noticeable.
I had the 80 for 18 years and the flex joint never failed or gave problems. If it makes any difference
mine were Genie extractors.
Putting them on was one of the best things I ever did to my 80 series. They may not be that good on other motors but definitely were on the 1 HZ.
cheers

Shane as I said extractors don't always make the same improvement to all engines. The 2H averaged 2MPG better econemy & improved top speed by approx 10 to 15 kph after fitting whereby the experience for many (Like Nick & Des below) is that gain is not typical on the 1HZ. I'm yet to hear of anyone who has achieved a 15% improvement measured on a dyno by just adding extractors & a bigger exhaust. Do some before & after testing & post up the results. Would be interested to hear your final difference.
Cheers Craig.............

Be there done that but I had to pay cold hard cash for my extractors.
It certinally revved crisper but driving it I could notice no differance. This was mated to a 2 1/2 mandrel exhaust with high flow mufflers.
IMHO, it is a total waste of money.

I had the same set up on my 100 series. For the first few weeks, I recon that I could feel the difference. Placebo Effect maybe or else I got used to it and it became the norm. At least it will breathe easier and that can't be too bad.

Hi Shane,
I think we have met - you may have bought my side steps? If so you have seen my 100s. I bought a second hand
Beaudesert Exhausts stainless system including extractors. The guy thought it would fit his 80 but apparently one goes inside the chassis while the other goes outside - don't remember which was which now. Anyway it was cheap for me. I know that for my vehicle there was a noticeable improvement in power and economy. I was told that if I can actually notice a difference in power, then it is probably 10% or more improvement. If it is a freebie go for it even just for the exhaust note, at least you will think you are going faster :-)

Yes we have met, it was the bullbar, you couldn't fit your big which to it.
I got under and had a look and it appears to have the same bends, better have another look to be sure.
Thanks Mike

I have Pacemaker extractors on my 1HZ and they made some difference in power and fuel economy - not 15% though more like 5%. Since you have them, I'd say go ahead and fit them. Nothing to lose, as even if you don't gain much, you won't do any harm. And they look cooler than the cast iron manifold :-)

Hi Shane,
I would definately fit the extractors and exhaust. I put the extractors and a mandrel bend exhaust on my 1HZ and got improvement. Not heaps, but noticeably for sure, maybe about 10%.
Mine is still a standard, non turbo diesel, just what I want as I dont tow.
Hope it helps you.
Kylie

Shane, I have a 1HZ in my troopie 2000 model. I had fitted extractors and a thru-flo muffler and noticed a marked improvement The troopiewent from 14 l/100 km to 12 and went up hills far quicker let me explain. If I could go up a particular
hill at say 60 in 4th gear with the extractors the same
hill I could do in 5th gear at 66 I could not believe it and tested it many times with the same result. However I believe that different results can happen depending on your engine even if they are the same. My system was installed by a
well respected old bloke who tuned exhausts for race cars nad I'm not talking about your average rev-head 4cylinder rice burners taht have those rediculis huge mufflers hanging out the back of them. I talking Real Circuit Racing cars.
