Hi Chris,
Why do you want to change vehicles. Nephew was telling me about a caby he spoke to re the AU and he said he had done a million Ks without the head coming off or any major work being required. Of course it was running on LPG and that may have helped. Can't say, but it does speak volumes for the vehicle in general.
So why the change???
Mind you the BA has a very good reputation as a tow vehicle.
I should now go and wash my mouth out. I am a landcruiser man through and through. LOL.
When you have a big job to do you cannot beat horse power and to get horse power without ringing the things neck (turbo) you need cubic inches.
What you save in fuel bills could
well be spent on repairs if you go smaller.
Just my opinion.
Cheers, Bruce.

Bruce,
Most cabs get consistantly high kilometres because their systems are constantly at optimal operating temps.
It's the same reason that longhaul trucks get extremely high kilometres before needing work done on them.

Thanks Disco,
I was aware of that mate but not so many years ago these sort of mileages, even in cabs, was unheard of.
The cabby's actual comment was "This is my second AU. The other one had a million kilometres on it and I never so much as had the head off it.Never had a spanner to it. I thought my luok was too good to hold out so I got rid of it and got this newer AU." This was about 4 years ago when this conversation took place.
It is testament to how
well built these modern motors are. That is what I was suggesting.
As Chris had already had good service out of his ford and he was not expressing a desire to go 4X4 I just though he could not do much better than stick with the fords. Especially as the later ones are even better.
Thanks for the info anyway Tony.
Cheers, Bruce.

I would be looking at a landcruiser diesel, cheap to run and reliable.
Not the fastest ,but should tow a 17 footer ok.
And you would have 4wd to do offraod excursions.
You could also have some cash left over to make the seats a little more comfy

hi chris a
well to me the choice would be easy if i was you
same car later model you've proved the fords durability and if your going to tow the same van why the delema
yes i appreciate there's no harm asking opinions as its the smart thing to do but imho the ford has already answered the question for you
the ford has a large truck like engine easy to service with access to everything good road clearance for a
sedan rear wheel drive which adds to better towing stability
there a nice size and roomy vehicle as you would
well and truely be aware of after travelling the big loop twice
you could possibly consider gas conversion and maybe a station wagen if availuble dont know if the ford towng packs are still availuble and you may have one on your ford au at the moment -makes a big difference
i know a few people who have had an excellent long trouble free run with their fords and they still have plenty of power if on gas
thats my thoughts chris there are plenty of s/h fords around
cheers barry

hi chris
you never said but i assume your van is an on rd model or whether you are wanting to include offrd in yr next tour even if you considered a 4wd for offrd side camping excusions
i think buying a s/hand landcruiser would be total overkill just to tow a 17 ft van when its
well documented that they are capable of towing bigger much much heavier vans than a 17 ft poptop
there are plenty of other smaller 4wds that can easily tow yr 17' van
and the lc would be more expensive too and with a budget of only $20,000 the lc you would get for that money would be on the end of its life span and could be needing a lot of expensive maintenance/repairs
cheers barry

Hi Chris,
would need to know which state you live in? Here in Tasmania there some good buys in 4x4's and as others have said having a 4x4 you can go offroad and see the spots you can only read about with a car?
Hope this is of some help.
cheers

Hi Chris,
Have a look at the Ford territory, same mechanicals as the Falcon, 4WD option, more ground clearance, service & parts available Australia wide

Just upgrade the Ford.
You can get a FG series Ford for under $20,000.
Example FG with low KM's
Or go back to around $15,000 and get a nice BF series 2 or 3.
With the BF, if auto, make sure to get a trans' cooler as they can over heat towing, not sure about the FG.
Have had a AU wagon and now have a BF series 2 wagon, love the power and ride, and I can do 7L per 100km at 100km/h on the highway, or 7.8L per 100km at 110km/h. Not bad for a 4L V6.
The BF has massive torque low down, normal driving without towing, you can stay under 2000rpm the whole time.
On the BF's, BA's and AU's you can get warped brake rotors, depending on usage, so you might look at upgrading the rotors if you find this an issue.

You mean 4L straight 6! But if it were me making the decision over again, I'd go for the BF over the BA because it has a number of improvements the BA lacked, and I'd be reluctant to go for an early build FG because they hadn't had time to iron out the bugs (not that there are many). The later ones are bloody brilliant.

You're right about the straight 6 R.W., I always get that wrong.
The upgrades were one of the main things that made me chase a BF series 2 over a cheaper BA, one of the nice things is the reduced cabin noise and how quickly it will change out of first gear, which is so much louder than any other gear.
I would be doing a fair bit of research into the FG before buying one as it is so new to market.

Id also be adding a tranny cooler to the falcon BA upwards as they are known for the cooler inside the radiator tank to rust/crack (even with the coolant flowing around it) and the cooler fluid to get into radiator coolant but worst of all is the coolant getting into the transmission and killing it. Very common and normally things start to happen when klms rearch above the 150k mark, ask any mechanical workshop or more transmission specialist.........

I think someone already hit the nail on the head with the territory, and on gas an obvious bonus.
