Do more people camp?

I am a little annoyed right now tried to book my annual Easter Straddie trip only to be told that there's ZERO camp spots free on the island. Last year we also booked 1 week before and had no issues at all with the Ferry or camping. We always free camp over at main beach and I can't understand how this booked out.

I can only put this to the fact that more people camp due to the cost of expensive hotel rooms or maybe they are capping the numbers like they do up at Noosa now?

Has anyone else experienced this?

It may have something to do with the Qld Recovery, and the advertising asking others to holiday in Qld.

A couple of groups I know have headed north in response to that advertising campaign. I would like to as well, a bit later in the year.

Still, it's a big state so you should not have too much trouble finding an equally attractive alternative location.

Enjoy your holiday.

You might be right Jack but where we go you need to be fully self sufficient and 4x4 only access. All the other places you will be sharing tent ropes/pegs with the guy next to you.

Will see how it pans out

Most likely due to it being a 5 day Easter weekend, followed by a 3 day week and another long weekend.
So just about everyone is looking to get out and do something.

Thanks for the info about Main beach - I was contemplating calling them up. Last year we went on one of the long weekends and they said they were getting close to their limit for camping there. I don't know what the limit might be ... I'm sure there'd still be heaps of space.

And I 3rd it. We are not camping this year. We are doing a quick trip to Lake Eyre to just have a look. And then home. Being in Canberra it means a lot of driving so there really isn't a lot of spare time to camp.

And when trying to find accommodation it was almost as bad as you found.

Cheers

Sounds like moreton with its shrinking camp grounds, sounds like the work of the greenies closing more of oz down.

I've been camping on moreton for 30 years, there are just less camping spots.

They put those copper log fences across entrances to camp areas apparently for rehabilitation, as you know they never re-open that area again so it just becomes less camping spots.

A camp spot will barely change shape in 30 years so I don't know why they have to do it in the first place.

Fraser is another example.

I think it's been slowly getting like that on Straddie for a couple of years.. a close friend goes there every Easter and last year and this year he has had difficulty getting sites. In fact, two years ago we were going to go at Easter with him, (but couldn't due to work) and he couldn't get a site on Flinders, and had to venture down Main Bch about 2/3rds to J/Pin. So last year and this year it's straight to Main Bch for them.

Probably just getting more popular. Like camping in general everywhere in Australia is getting more popular. Look how many new people visit this forum, and the amount of, for want of a better word, "newbies" to camping/travelling/adventuring. Lot's of media coverage from TV shows that show how great camping is, and lots of info on the net to "educate" people.

Cheers

Brian

Retailers of camping equipment report being very busy on the run up to Easter. With all the wet weather there is a great deal of pent up desire to go camping. Easter is the first chance of doing it and not getting washed out in a long time.

We are staying at home. Plenty of other opportunities when there is space to spare. Crowded camp grounds? No thanks.

It may have some thing to do with a new 3 month booking policy by DERM, you can only book 3 months in advance now, may be people seeing this and booking straight away.

Geez I could't tell you what I am doing in 3 days time let alone 3 months, might even kick the bucket in that time frame.

troll, I hope this means the hinterland campgrounds will have less in them with everyone heading to the beach spots.

Happy Easter to you both.
Trevor.
