I think our days of sitting on top of a
hill looking down at my mates Navara trying to get up may be numbered.
Recently he got the first of the new Navara's with the 3lt V6 170kw Peugeot
derived diesel and I finally got the keys.
This thing goes like a train - from a standing start to 100kmh up a long
hill it just pulls and pulls right thru the rev range, the new 7 speed auto is super slick and changes were hardly noticeable.
It outperforms the 200 series in terms of power to weight ratio.
550nm of torque really does talk.

What surprized me was that unlike my auto petrol 4800 Patrol the Navara downchanges thru the cogs as
well so as your pulling up to the lights you can here it up matching the revs - this extra engine braking should make it
a serious tow vehicle, although its only rated at 3000kg, but has a 860kg carrying capacity .
Its not so pretty underneath though - plastic fuel tank, incredibily thin shocks and leaf springs will mean aftermarket changes are needed here.
We put it on my ramp and it came up
well short of the Patrol.

Its a bit luxury type car though , quiet but thankfully still uses keys to start it with.
Its a bit early to tell about fuel consumption but early indications are good.
At 9.3lt/100km its spec is the 2nd lowest in Nissans range of 10 different Navaras.
This car like dual cab is quite easy to like overall, but all this comes at a $60k + price tag.

I have written off the new Patrol already Trevour (hence the new 4800).
This dual cab and the 200 series are the only smooth relatively quiet diesels we have driven that would make the wife happy with there more than adequate power.
So a price in the $60's looks good compared to Cruiser.
It really is a lovely car - not just a ute - but
well, we put it side to side with our new Patrol which was only $50k and we will stick to the petrol car - but that engine is real sweet , and its going into the Pathfinder , but if it was in a Patrol I reckon we would jump ship pretty quick.

A more powerful engine doesn't justify the difference in price between the normal Navara this one IMO. At $60+ and only available in 3 colours, doesn't quite ad up.

I guess you have to have the right view of what the car is to you Terra.
As a basic ute - its way overpriced.
If you were after a strong quiet economical touring vehicle with loads of space
and a plush interior and features then you looked around at the competitors like
Prado's Cruisers etc then it looks good value for money.
Maybe we can get the owner to reply - he is/was a member.

I think the vehcile sounds awesome Robin but the price difference has me questioning the differences, I could still buy the Navara STX for around $50k and have a plush touring vehicle as you call it, so is the extra $10k justified for the increase in power alone.?

I think your right- for most its not worth $10k for just power alone Terra.
I haven't driven the other STX - but this car gave touring car low levels of NVH
lots of little goodies and a silky smooth transmission which appears to be engineered for better engine braking as
well , if these advantages came only with the new engine then its hard to beat.

Hi Robin, Did I read your post correctly? You would step out of a duel fuel vehicle for a DIESEL....
well I never thought I would ever read that from you....gee after the raves you gave your 4800 & you would consider a diesel!!! Yep for 60 large I am more than happy with the VRX NT Pajero...the build quality, accessories, safety features & the best manufacturers warranty in Australia makes the Mitsubishi product hard to beat IMHO ....oh and I can eat, drink, sleep in the vehicle & root around in the glovebox & centre consoles too!!!

Hi Orejap
Not quite (I don't have duel fuel) - but I never cared about what fuel or even Toyo or Nissan for that matter - its the engineering reality on the ground that counts and I have only ever now driven 2 diesels with enough power to get to the car to 100 in 10 secs and still be quiet and smooth enough so that I can hear our Koala's over the engine with the windows down - the 200 series and now this one.

The Pathfinder 550 is $75K, so against the Prado same spec I suppose it ok. but is it up to the VW Touareg V6 TDI around the same price? I would be interested if they fitted the V6 in the Navara with the space cab alloy tray and 6 speed manual, jack it up, now that would be a fast outback tourer.

I am not sure where the Pathy will fit in Bruce, to me its as structually limited by its all independant
suspension as the Prado is with its rollover angles.
They are both very hard issues to fix - wheres the issues I would see with the STX probably will resolve around weak
suspension and the general vunerability underneath of D40 vehicles.
These types of things can at least be addressed with aftermarket stuff.
The more I think this thru - if your really after a big strong comfortable letourer for the family -
well what else is there really in the $60k bracket.
( The Patrol 4800 is not available any more new.)

Today I visited a Toyota dealer, Prado GXL auto $67K nmtp (no more to pay), Hilux SR5 manual $58 nmtp.
I have driven the VW Amorak Trendline $53,200 with 16 inch mags nmtp, nice vehicle but not sure of the 2.0 litre motor, even though it pulled very
well. Have driven auto and manual D.Max and at $40K nmtp it is on the top of the list. But will wait for the new Ford
Ranger to see what it is like. No hurry really can not kill the MU anyway hahahahahaha

I drove a new V6 TDI Touareg in Germany 2 months back. Awesome diesel, quiet, powerfull, 8 litres/100km at 100 kph. I got it up to 220 kph on the motorway and wasn't near flat out (chickened out). The Euro diesels are fantastic. Mike

The V8 petrol Patrol released in the Arab States has independent
suspension so if you are thinking the same
suspension or similar to the old you are sadly mistaken....Nissan will release a diesel Patrol when they have satisfied the countries who prefer petrol vehicles first....Australia is only a drop in the Nissan ocean when it comes to diesel vehicle demands....so you might have to go Tojo Robin!!!
