What is wrong with the Site

Hi All

Is it just me or are the gremlins working overtime at a very fast rate at the moment. All weekend photos will not load, not just for me but others. I know that changes are good, but there is an old saying "if it is not broken do not fix it"

I think that it now needs fixing and back to the way it was with far less problems.

The number of blogs that I have tried to open with either no photos at all or the usual error that they can not be loaded.

Is it just me??

Cheers

Hi Bill and Ikos

Sorry for the delays in replying, but try as I did, there was no tread or reply option.

This what would come up.

Stephen.
I agree I seem to be able to open some posts, but others will not open, I thought it was at my end (I am not a member).
BTW Thanks for your Cooper Creek updates.

I'm trying to edit a photo on my blog and I keep getting "out of memory" when trying to preview.
Can open my blog photos no worries though

Stephen,
I just rebooted the system. We are in the process of replacing the server in the next couple of weeks so there are a few preliminary tasks going on but the short story is we have reached the end of use on the current primary web server and also our database server needs an upgrade. I expect to have this completed in the next 3 weeks so hopefully our pain will not last for too long.

Fasinated by what you need to do to keep this web site running could you give us a insight to what you need to do to upgrade it when you have completed it.

Hi David

Thanks for that. I was having issues all weekend but it went berserk last night. If you check out the Flinders Ranges post, there is still problems with it, even this morning after a reboot.

It first said that when I tried to load pictures for the post as I do, that I was not able to do so, as I was not a member and this option was for members only. Then after I was able to do so, no of the pictures would display:

Image Could Not Be Found

I have loaded a good number of images, yet it still says that the images could not be found, even this morning after your reboot???

Do you have a photo limit for this to happen or is it one of the gremlins.

Cheers

Hi Stephen,

Its not you. I got the "not a member" treatment on Saturday when I was trying to upload photos. That problem eventually went away, but then when I was working on a blog and did a preview most of the photos that displayed were from a previous blog. By this stage I was pretty fed up so hit submit anyway and to my surprise all the photos displayed correctly. I dont think Im going to try any more uploads for a while!

I have noticed that for quite a while now the site will often run slow at intermittent times. Maybe it will be fine while browsing a few posts then suddenly wont open the next one. Very frustrating.

I do hope that Davids upgrade will fix things. However there are other little annoying things eg my signature photos are displaying the captions used from previous photos. I have noticed this problem on one or two other members sig photos too. Also many of the captions on photos in my Members Gallery/blogs seem to have been scrambled. While I can easily fix the signature captions I am reluctant to do anything to the other photos as Im unsure how it will impact on the blog photos.

End of gripe for the morning!

Cheers,

Val

Val,

the photos appearing from a previous blog is actually a chaching problem. I encountered it some time back and flagged it with David. I haven't had much of an issue with it since. If it happens again, the best bet is to "submit" the blog and then re-open it using the edit function. A bit undtidy but it get's the photos cached properly and then allows you to complete the blog as per normal.

Cheers Mick

Stephen,
Interesting - I just had to restart the processes again this morning and now the images in the Flinders Post are working. I am curiuos as the problem may be related to the images. I will check this out and advise.

BTW: Most of our current issues are related to the images/gallery and resizing systems. The unlimitted photo allowances and the ability to upload large file size images is why the server is running out of memory. Mind you it is 4GB and is all being consumed by EO image renders. So rest assured I am on it just trying to find and resolve each issue.

Val,
I have just looked at the description that is showing on your RIg pic and this is what the old system had loaded for the description - So I suspect at some stage you guys changed the RIg pic and not the description. I di recall that the description change was not visible for a long period so you may not have even realised. To fix this simply click on the My Profile tab at the top and you will see your Profile pictures. in the lower right hand side of the image will be an Edit icon - click on this and change the title and description as required.

The new Profile pic gallery system supports changing the title and description at anytime without the need to upload the image again. So please have a try and let me know how it goes.

OMG - I just re-read the image resize code for the whole system and there is a missing line of code that will be consuming resources. Now I am not saying this is the only problem but it is certainly a problem.
I am about to shutdown the system to install this update and we will be able to monitor progress once it is loaded.
I hope this solves it but it looks promissing and would explain why the occurance of the failures has increased as I have added load to the gallery systems.

David,

Followed your suggestion and edited the profile pic title. Think you may have been working on the system at the time, so initially unsuccessful. Then it worked! Ten minutes later, back to the old title. Will give it a while to stabilize then try again.

Everyone,
I think the update fixed it as the resource usage on the system seems very stable so we may have a solution to the problem of the system running out of memory. I am still upgrading the servers as this is required anyway but hopefully we will get a stable system from now it. It does look good in my monitoring thus far since the update about 1 hour ago.

Val,
This is most strange can you have one more go for me and report.

David,

Edited caption of profile pic - editing function appears ok, but still picks up old caption, both here and in blogs. Maybe I'm being too hasty - reading from cache that hasn't had time to update?

David,
Another oddity that's shown up recently - Click on a profile image in a thread to super size. Then clicking Previous and Next on the images will run up and down through the profile pics of contributors to that thread. Maybe intentional (?) but seems odd. Probably a red herring in the present discussion, but thought I should mention in case it's related.

Cheers

Hi Stephen, Val, and All,

Ah! It's lovely to know I'm not a dope and that my computer is not to blame for all the problems I've been having in the last couple of days.

All seems okay now. I can relax and have a cuppa

I was having all sorts of problems last night. At first I was blaming the computer, so I then turned on the new one and the same. I feel very sorry for David, as if this was what he wanted first thing Monday morning.

Yes I have just had something similar, along with the "memory" message. But it went back to normal fairly quickly.

David, have just again tried to change the title on our signature pic, but still unable to do so.
