Hi, we have heard some great things about
Stanage Bay & really want to take a trip down to
check it out. We were thinking of going down over
easter. I was just wondering, firstly, what the road is like? We have a 4WD, so won't be a problem for us, but some friends want to come too & they have a regular
sedan, is the road accessible for a conventional car? Also, I have read that the camping is free, is this still the case & do we need to book, or is it just first in best dressed? Any help or info is greatly appreciated, cheers.

Gday Scott
If you Google
Stanage Bay , there is a three minute film that shows the road and camping ground. But they don't say where it is.

There is an area on the esplanade that was free (donation?) when we were last there.
Normal
sedan no probs if road is dry.
Main focus is fishing or there are a couple of short drives (4wd) along the coast.
Not realy much else.
regards

Wife and I spent two weeks there last year and loved it. Road in was a breeze as it had just been graded. We towed in a 14ft van with a Rodeo 4x4. Towards the end of our stay we had a hell of a lot of rain and the road out was pretty messy, however, this said a couple of regular sedans passed us on the way out. Camping is free in Endevour park oppossite the
shop. A donation to the town can and should be made at the
shop and they will give you a receipt. Take your own
drinking water in. There is a
dam where you can get rough water from for showers. We were there in school holidays and there were hardly any others camped there. Getting a site should not be a problem but they cannot be pre booked. A very good idea would be to Google
Stanage Bay, get the phone number of the
shop and ask them the condition of the road before you go in. Hope this is of some use. We will be going back.

Pete, thanks so much for all of the info. We have decided that it sounds like the place for us! Nice and relaxing. We are all set up with our camper trailer so good to go. We might see you there one day :)

Thanks for posting about this place guys....it is now in my little black book of
places to visit. Sounds like it would be worth stopping over for and extended period.

Here's a copy of a message and
pic i got off a fellow myswag member a couple of years ago. I hope it helps.
"I will describe the areas I know and you can choose what you want. Hopefully this will make the
camp areas easy to find as when I first went there I had no idea.
Some of the areas you can have a fire. You will see when you are there. It is all council land so people use local wood so can be little around. My suggestion is take your own.
Stanage Bay is made up of three main little villages. When you enter the
Stanage Bay area you go past a road on the right that goes to one village but no camping grounds there.
Down the track a bit and another village on right but closer to the road you are on. Turn right into this housing area and go straight down road. At the end is a
beach access area with nice shady trees. On map I have marked this as 'A'.
Personally, I like the 'A' area now that I have a ct and chemical
toilet. This means anywhere in this area is good. Don't think fires here are allowed but can't remember.
Further down the road and you get to Plumtree which has the store. Practically across the road from the store is another
camp ground. It has
toilets but with it being free, last time I checked it out I decided a prefered elsewhere.
Go past Plumtree store, past the Coastguard shed, past the boatramp. The road turns into a dirt track which eventually gets to a little creek. This area, 'C' on map, has a heap of little camping spots set off the road. Some of these are great spots. I have camped in this area in tents (before CT days) and it has been great. Tend to be more sandflies. Sometimes not left real clean. Fires are fine here.
So, there you have it. I don't know what you are after but the best areas in 'C' tend to go quickly. Often RVs park in there. Can be more private as bit more bush around. The 'A' area is up a little higher and I have had more breeze there in summer. Not as private but with a CT that is not an issue with me compared to when I had a little tent. It does not take long to
check them out when you know where they are!"
cheers, Rob
