My daughter has moved to the NT and is looking to buy a dual cab diesel Hilux for general travel and some off road remote camping (eg.,
Palm Valley type of stuff).
For price, reasonable reliability and driveability , we are looking at 2001 - 2004 models with between 150 - 200km on the clock. I' d appreciate any comments on anything we need to keep a close eye on for Hilux's of this era and kms, and any other comments on suitability or otherwise.
Thanks for the help. Poitr

Surfs where never sold in Australia in the years dates you are looking at anyway.
But the luxes are a good thing with better build quality then currant ones and cheaper repairs as
well.
Cheers Pete

"Its the last of the model that was made in Japan.. "
Sort of true, but not all before that were made in Japan. My 2001 turbo diesel was assembled in Thailand.
I believe the first hilux assembled in Thailand was in 1997 and they were assembled in both Japan and Thailand (and the Philipines) until 2005 when they were no longer assembled in Japan.
After 2005 they're assembled in Argentina, Pakistan, China, and South Africa as
well as Thailand but I think only Thai ones came to Australia.
Thought all the 2001-2004 3 Lt Turbo Diesel (KZN models) were assembled in Thailand but I could be wrong.
Still one of the better Hilux models though wherever they're built.

Hi Pete, i dont know what the "plans" are but the NT would be the worst place to buy a D/C Hilux, they are way over priced up there due to the demand for them is very high ..... (
well they were before the floods ect, may have changed)
If you do look at anything compare it to prices down south before you decide, you may get lucky but i dont think so, also get onto "redbook" on the web to get the exact "worth" of the car you are looking at so you at least know of it's actual market value ...........
Cheers
Joe

Thanks Joe. Yep, they do seem inflated in the NT. I'll
check out the redbook. Ptr

Hi Poitr, I have 2003 T/D Hilux KZN165R, had it since '05. I cannot fault it, Service price is a bit $$ but I could get in this arvo and head off anywhere, great tow vechicle with rear susp upgrade as
well.
Very happy.

I'm guessing this is what you mean...
7 Litres of Synthetic Diesel Oil ,If you dont buy a 10 litre you can buy a 5 litre x2 HPR 15w-50 5l@ $38
Fuel Filter $35
Oil Filter $30
Air Filter $35
I bought the 2 way oil filter wrench (to remove oil filter) Bursons $18
and i bought a plastic oil pan to catch the oil $10
Oil and air filter every 5k (unless there is heavy traffic on dirt roads you'll need to change everytrip if its the case) and the fuel filter every 10k
Plus if you need a mechanic ad his costs but
mine passed away recently after 30 years in the same
shop...I do it myself now....
In my opinion not expensive at all... ~(*--)
