On 27 Oct last year, I put up a thread (# 82155) about a proposed Veterans Retreat for Meentheena Station, or a portion thereof, in the Pilbara.

I have just received further information from Member David L1 (Vic) and it now seems to be full speed ahead.

"According to a West Australian Ministerial Media Statement dated 3 Feb 11,Norm Whitburn signed a 5 year agreement for a portion (3 km wide X 52 km long) of Meentheena Station. Sending this for your info. As a follow on to archived thread 82155."

This will become a stop over for many members of ExplorOz, and I for one, can't wait to visit and support

I will try to get enough info together to include it in Places, but I may need some help with that, as my computing literacy is not that great. I know Mick O gave us the gps co-ordinates in the original thread.

Cheers all.

Fred.

Great news, Fred.

I know it got into the November 2010 NSW 'Salute', the journal for the NSW TPIs.

Fred

I hope so. But I have a serious "bucket list" and its not just for a joke.

Are you going to a reunion at the Tweed in November?

Just wondering if we belong to the same mob.

ex-110 ? When ? Did you know that there is another reunion planned for 2012 in Vungers? If you are going to Meentheena go in the winter months. Also a great R&R spot for other trips to this bueatiful and remote part of Aus.

70 to 71. Mainly with 110 in VT but used to go up to 104 every now and then. Also worked in 104 when they were in Ingleburn. Did a few "quiet" things with "special" corps while there.

Not going to Vietnam. I hate the place. It totally stuffed me up for many years until someone (rubber legs" if you know him) grabbed me by the collar and we checked me out. No way. My skin crawls around asians. And my eldest son married one. I cannot help it and she is the most gracious and lovely woman. Of course after my wife that is.

Not really into stopping long in one place so R&R at the retreats is not my style. A couple of nights is our bag.

What about you? Going to the Tweed thing.

And I think we should not go too far as this is a bit OT. Even though it is very important to us, others wont want it here.

Catchya

That was mainly addressed to you Lindsay.

Fred beat me to the thread. Typical Navy. Always trying to justify why they claim to be the senior service.

Forwarding an email about this good news received yesterday:

Today was a truly a historic day for all veterans and Para-military veterans . Today we signed the licence for a respite at Meentheena in the presence of the Deputy Premier and Regional Development and Lands. In company of Secretary Derek Phillips and Vice President Peter Fitzpatrick the occasion was a memorable one . My sincere thanks to the committee and the effort that has been put into this project for it to become a reality. THANK YOU.
Now the hard work begins , the committee is having a closed meeting to get our priorities together for fund / donations / membership going so we can get the station liverable for veterans to start visiting 2011. We must be mind full that at this time no insurance is available to protect veterans ,so it is visit at own risk and be care full
Our secretary will be publishing our plan of attack and will be asking for sub committees such as work and social directors etc. This is a chance to be part of building something substantial for the future veterans.
