In my 2000 G.U Patrol the sub tank light is on and therfore the sub tank is now full and the exchange pump won't work. The fuse is ok and I put a new one in just in case. does any body know the where abouts of th sub tank control unit as Im thinking this may be faulty and the w/shop manual doesn't tell you where it is,or has any body had this trouble before and can suggest what it is .It was working until I had the vehicle detailed and hasn't worked since. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Hi Beegee,
I have a 1999 2.8 turbo diesel GU Patrol. I struck the same problem with my sub tank.
I found that the sub tank will not transfer if the main tank is full and disconnecting both terminals from the battery and leaving them off for about 20 minutes reset the sub tank control and it worked perfectly after that

Thanks fellas yes I Know it won't pump until the main tank is about 3/4 full but the sub tank light in the dash has never been on before, but the disconnection of the battery sounds like a good place to start ,fingers crossed.

I had a 1998 2.8 Pootrol and after trying to cross a river the sub tank light came on and stayed on. I couldn't pump fuel from sub into main & was down to zero fuel in main tank. Nissan's stupid system of not being able to drive the vehicle off either or either tank is a pain. Unlike the tojo system which allows the driver to use either tank. Took mine to Nissan dealer & was told it was some type of sensor that detected air or water & shut off. From memory I believe the Pootrol pumps 850ml or similar into the main tank from the sub. This is a design to keep the pump lubricated & active. It happens when you start the vehicle after it has been switched off for awhile. Some Nissan owners also claim great fuel economy but the trick is to fill up the sub & main tank to do the calculation.

I wouldnt think it would pump 850ml every time you start the vehicle. Probably more like under 100ml, but the reason it does it is right.

I had a similar problem some 2 or 3 years ago, the patrol went to the dealers 3 times and they couldnt fix it, eventually changed the aux fuel pump, $600 for the pump and $600 for all the time they wasted trying to find the fault.. They even had a go at fitting another earth strap, very poory executed attempt i may add. Michael

G'day this is only my 2nd post so I hope it works. I have a 2000 GU Patrol which did exactlly the same thing. There is a control module that initiates a transfer of fuel from the sub to the main tank every time you turn the ignition on. The first time it this issue happened to me I took the car to a dealer who disconnected the module, waited 5 minutes then connected it back and the problem was fixed.
It happened again about a year later, rather than take half the dash apart I disconnected the battery and let it sit over night and that fixed it too, a bit like a cold boot on a computer. It's worth a try.
