Anne Beadell Highway

We are planning a trip with 3 other vehicles in May, travelling from Kata Tjuta to Warburton and then Eastwards along the Anne Beadell Highway to Cooper Pedy. We are contemplating taking our Off-Road trailer and looking for advice as to whether this will be OK, based on current road conditions etc.

Really well made proper off road trailer should be ok, keep the speed and tyres down and you should survive. Also allow plenty of time so as to allow for early camps and plenty of breaks, you will need them on the SA section.
We've travelled it a few times over the years, the latest last year and it is getting more corrugated then ever to the stage where we will probably never travel it again. Absolutely horrendous corrugations to the point where it is easier to drive through the scrub in many places than try to drive on the track(s). East from Emu is the worst.
It is probably at the stage where for the environments sake the authorities should grade it as the detour on detour and detour to try and avoid the worst bits is starting to degrade the area.

As Peter has said the SA section is the worst. I broke Shockers and Shocker Mounts on my L/cruiser last year and I wasn`t towing.
You will need a very good, fair dinkum, off road trailer.

As a suggestion only, remove your outside mirrors if possible to avoid them being smashed by the scrub.

Good Luck,

Scrubby.

I've travelled on the Anne Beadell Hwy most years since 2001.
Last year we had 4 offroad trailers and had zero problems. The trailers were Tvan, Aussie Swag, Adventure and Kimberley, so I guess thats the top end of the market. Everyone let a lot of air out of their tyres and took the corrugations slowly (as Peter says above). The sand won't bother you - its pretty firm and the dunes are low and run mostly parallel to the road.

I've seen others out there who have trashed their trailers, busted water tanks, bent draw bars, broken axles, etc etc so if your trailer is at all dodgy, I'd leave it behind.

Thanks
We have a campomatic, so it is built well for the conditions (I hope)

Hi ChalkieSA

Like all others have said above, be prepared for the worst. Most people that damage their vehicles and equipment, do so for 2 main reasons, speed and too high Tyre pressures. Work on a minimum of 7 days from Laverton to Coober Pedy.

The track is in reasonable condition until Neale Junction and from there on until Ilkurlka, is in first class condition. Within a few kilometres of Ilkurlka the corrugations start and will keep you company for the next 4 days or say. Some say that they get worse once you enter SA, but we found them much the say with the worst in and around Emu through to Tallaringa Well and beyond. Once you get close to Mabel Creek, you will feel like you are driving on bitumen.

Below are a few pictures of the changing conditions across the Anne Beadell.

Have a great trip and keep your speed and type pressures down low. (over 20 psi is too high)

Cheers

Stephen
