My son has a Gu patrol 2.8 ltr turbo Deisel long wheel base and at present it has lost 5th and reverse gear 1st through to 4th are fine but to get 5th and reverse it doesnt want to know about it. Are there any Patrol people out there that might know where we should start to fix the problem cheers.

A good place to get an answer would be the "Patrol"
forum who specialise in these.
Apparently they did have this
well known problem.
Can be caused by towing in 5th.

Graham, I think the 2.8 had a lighter box and not the 3L and 4.2 box... But i could be wrong!! Michael

You are possibly right but thats what apparently causes the problem in some cases as
well as in other makes
However he asks about a 2.8 specifically so wasnt even thinking about the other sizes as he doesnt want to know that.
I was told when I bought my 3.0 that it had a lighter drive train then the 4.2
Im no expert but thats what the dealer told me was the cause for restriction of the towing capacity.

You will probably find you have stripped the spline on the shaft and more than likely in the 5th gear[ been there done that ], cost approx $1500 make sure you get the shaft and gear replaced with the later shaft which has a longer and heaver spline.

Carl is probably right.
Common problem for them to strip the spline.
2.8's are the worst patrol gearbox to get out also, sorry.
The gearbox repair itself will set you back around 15 hunjy providing the rest of the box is ok. Good time to
check the clutch while it's out and replace the dual mass flywheel with a solid flywheel.. There's another 15 hunjy...

When my gearbox went I replaced the clutch and put in a solid flywheel from memory that was another $2500

That could be correct, i have a feeling that the 2.8 had a lighter built box.. Michael

Hi Duane
If he has lost 5th and reverse only, it is not likely to be a stripped spline etc. I would be looking more at the shift mechanism. From what I can see in the manual, reverse and 5th have different shift forks but has a common fork rod. This fork rod is bolted to the reverse fork and if this bolt has broken then you would loose both reverse and 5th.
I do not know if you can get to the top of the box through the flloor or not but either way, I would be removing the top of the box to have a look as it may be a simple fix.
Reverse, 5th and the shifting mechanism is housed in the rear OD housing, which looks to be easily removed without having to touch the rest of the gear box.

Thanks for the info Chris i think your on the money .I dont beleive the spline is striped as the box showed no gradual failing when changing into 5th and rev it just jammed so i will look through the top and hopefully find what you have explained thanks again.
