Hi All,

I downloaded the trial version of OziExplorer for Android on my HTC Desire.

I do not have any electronic maps and would like to download a map (other than the free maps offered by Ozi) to see how well Ozi works on my phone.

I am happy to buy a map but not the complete mapsets offered by Hema and others as I just want something to test with. The only map I found I could buy for $20 was a Hema map of Margaret River & Southern Forests Explorer Card Covers from Bunbury down to Pt D'Entrecasteaux NP, west to Boyup Brook. Not quite what I am after as I am based in Perth and would prefer something closer to home (not necessarily street maps either).

Does anyone know of anywhere else I can get suitable maps off the internet in either ozf2, ozfx3 format? I have checked some the GPS forums/websites with little success.

Cheers
Mark

Yes they are free. There are also a whole lot of free TV's in Harvey Norman, free petrol in your local service station and free money in the bank for the taking too.

They are that kind of free.

Hi Boobook
If you have a look at thread ID No: 36829 from Aug 2006
Reply No: 4, Follow Up No: 8
Here are the relevent quotes:

"They were originally produced by the Dept of Lands and calibrated etc for OziExplorer by Festy on the www.gpsaustralia.net forum."

"I've checked with Festy and Craigus of GPSAustralia and OK by them so long as no money etc changes hands and Festy and GPSAustralia are acknowledged."

So the maps can be used freely.

Totally wrong Boobook. Best to check before venturing an uninformed opinion.

I apologise if I am wrong but it is my understanding that the oziexplorer.map files were made by "festy" and probably belong to him. However the image files are copyrighted by the people who made them - VICMAP.

They seem to believe the maps are copyright too, strangly enough.

"I've checked with Festy and Craigus of GPSAustralia and OK by them so long as no money etc changes hands and Festy and GPSAustralia are acknowledged."

Perhaps checking with the people who own the maps, as opposed to the people who copied them will give a different answer.

Hi boobook
I can only go on what Festy himself says:
Image Could Not Be Found
This is from the My Swag Forum:

I think he really means the .map files were made by him which anyone can do with a little work. For 100% sure the map images are from Vcmap and are copyrighted. He did not make these, they have been around in print for years ( and have a copyright message on the print version).

I know that's not what he says, but as I said, the person you refer to, is the person distributing the files, he is not likely to admit that he has comitted a crime that has up to $450,000 in fines. Perhaps he has got free distribution rights ( but I seriously doubt it given all map companiies don't have it)

If people want to copy it, they should make their own desicion and frankly it is none of my business, however I would not personally promote the copying of it if I was you unless I have it in writing from the original copyright owner ( Vic Lands department). This could also make you liable for the same fine. That would be a very big fat OUCH.

Boobook,

These maps have been freely available since 2006. Do you seriously think that in that time no one would have reported an alleged breach of copyright to Vic DSE or NSW Lands and neither of those departments would have acted on such a report ?

Yes he does have free distribution rights under very strict conditions already stated on this and other Forums. Each of the maps has the following copyright notice as per the agreements Festy has with each of the relevant copyright holders.

Vic maps
2006 josh@festy.org derived from data provided by the Department of Sustainability and Environment Victoria

NSW maps
Department of Lands 2005 compiled by josh@festy.org

Once again you go off accusing someone of a crime with ABSOLUTELY no evidence to back up your allegation. If you're so certain a crime has been committed, REPORT it. It's your civic duty to do so.

I am just highlighting it to people who would otherwise think it is legal based on your reccomendations. It is up to them to decide what to do.

You believe what you want. BUT for sure the Victorian maps were made and are ownned and were around long before tthey were put on a file serve,r and they ARE subject to copyright.

The geoscience web site has free 1:25K maps for all of Australia.

You will need a copy of the full OziExplorer to produce the .MAP files to use with them. Also the maps need to be in the ozfx format to use in the Android version. You can convert the downloaded ecw format maps to Ozfx using a utility also found in the OziE web pages.

If this is too hard, PM me and I will email you a ozfx map and relevant MAP file.

"The geoscience web site has free 1:25K maps for all of Australia. "

Wouldn't that be nice :) Just in case some people get excited this is an obvious typo - they are 250K scale.....

Hi

Use Mobile Atlas Creator to make an OziExplorer calibrated image for your area of interest. Suggest you use nearmaps (air photos) as a source ...or maybe OSM

Mobile Atlas Creator

They are produced in png format...so after you have your image and calibration file convert it to ozf using

IMG2OZF
