Hi All,
Just wondering if anyone has travelled the '
Lake King Norseman Road' in WA? I am looking for the shortest route to
Norseman from Brunswick
Junction and rather by-pass
Esperance.
thanks,
John

That road has become a bit of a goat track lately I believe
John. Not very much travelled now but quite ok in a reasonable 4by, be prepared to not see anyone else for 300odd kms.
A better option for you is the
Hyden -
Norseman road accessed from Brunswick via Collie, Williams, Narrogin, Kondinnin
Hyden. This road comes out in
Norseman township.
Being a
mine road it is
well maintained in the main although if any recent rain occurs then there can be delays. A call to Main Roads in
Norseman can give latest conditions. Watch out for trucks.
Cheers Neil (Bunbury WA)

I travelled it 4 weeks ago and agree with Neil.
I will be going
home from Bunbury to
Scone via
Hyden.

hi
john s
i second above comments as mentioned 80km/hr is the sensible speed to travel and respect the road trains you meet and they will respect you
the the
lake king norseman rd is lacking maintenance particulary between the old 90mile tank and
norseman /
esperance rd on eastern section
that is the
dundas shire section and it appears they are ignoring it in preference for the
norseman hyden rd which is theirs as
well (
dundas being the name of the
norseman shire )
cheers and enjoy the trip

In January, we travelled from
Norseman to Bunbury via
Hyden in 1 day towing our Swan Outback.
The road was a little sandy around the vermin fence, but apart from that I would use that 300km of dirt road instead of the bitumen whenever possible. Great touring and stopping off at some of
the rock formations, and easily cruised at 80km/h - just slow right down for the corners because of the "ball bearing gravel".

Hi
John
We enjoy the drive, but take it slowly, particularly in the potholed and poorly maintained Hann NP section. For us it is a short cut
home. Not good in the rain!
The
Hyden Norseman road is a
well maintained wide road as aforesaid, with
nice camp grounds (particularly at
The Breakaways and
Lake Johnston) and has a number of interesting features along the signed trail. Again, this can be closed after heavy rain. Watch out for mining road trains.
The latter would be quicker; the former shorter. Both are enjoyable drives.

I am hoping to this trip as
well at the end of the year. Heading over to Tassie so will be leaving
Perth to go to
Norseman. Is this road much quicker then going the way of bitumen (via Kalgoorlie). I know its gravel so that slows you down but i will be towing as
well. If there is not that much difference then it may not be worth the hassle and dust. Interested to hear people comments or thoughts.

Hi Matthew
Using a trip planner,
Perth to
Norseman by the highway is 722 km 9 hours travel and via
Hyden 642 and 10 hours travel. It just depends on what you want to see; if you haven't been either way before, choose the bitumen.

Actually it came out as 10 hours and 41 minutes via
Hyden, but i find times given by trip planners not very accurate.

Greetings All,
Thanks for the info here. I've been cogitating whether to try the
Lake King Norseman Road heading west for Xmas - we've traveled the
Hyden Norseman route before and can recommend it.
Cheers,
Jo
