I have bought a 94 Hilux 2.8ltr Diesel and after my first service (in Perth) found the oil level to be 1cm above the high level mark of the dipstick. The car manual has the 2.8ltr oil capacity at 6 litres. I have just changed the oil (including the filter) with 5 litres of new oil. Ran the engine and found the level to be 3/4 up between low and high mark. Is this correct! Do I just top up to the high level or do I add another 1ltr.
The reason for my question is that the dipstick looks very new and not genuine.

I have always put in exactly what the book says then i have seen on the dipstick where that makes the level and i will always gauge that as the correct level.....
If you go by the book you cant go wrong...(misprints excluded)....._____________________________________________

Hi Pedro
Good to see you keeping clean oil up to your 'Lux. The OE dipstick is of the spring wire variety and not easy to read. Initially go with the correct oil volume. Sump and filter volume at change should be 5.3 litres. Toyota reccomends that level be maintained between low and high mark on dipstick at operating temperature. A rule of thumb test for your dipstick would be the amount of oil required between those two points, in your engine 1.6 litres.

Thanks Hughey,

I can relax now. I was concerned because the previous mechanic (Perth) tried to repair a small leak on the front crankshaft oil seal (installed speedi sleeve), however he nicked the sleeve and it continued to leak. This was manageable until a few weeks ago when it totally failed. Got onto a good Karratha mechanic who knew what he was doing. I finally have a car that doesn't leak oil.
I love my Hilux; it has allowed my family to explore the Pilbara including the really hard to get to areas.

Cheers Pedro

Pedro, I assume you have checked the obvious.
Has the sump been hit by a rock/branch and pushed in/up at the bottom?

Thanks again,

No probs there. It looks like if I add another 300ml (5.3ltr total) I will hit the high level mark. I am curious if this is the norm with other similar Hilux's. What is your experience? Ie What is the expected ltrs at low and ltrs at the high mark.

Cheers Pedro

I change the oil and filter every 5000 and only use five litres. It's better to be slightly under thefull mark than over it.

Thanks for the feedback. It looks like my dipstick is actual at the correct length.

No-one seems to have pointed out the danger of over-filling. If the oil level is too high, then the crankshaft hits the oil. The physical energy absorbed by the oil can overheat or even boil the oil. So be careful.Joey&Verna

Agree,
That's why I was concerned when the car was delivered to me in Karratha with an oil level 1cm above the high mark.
