Has anyone ever changed the rear main seal on their TD42 before. The Gregorys book says to remove the seal retainer which means to remove the sump, which I really don't want to do.

I can't see why you can't remove the seal while leaving the retainer in place, What have you experienced?

Cheers Luke

There is three different part number rear main seals fitted to the TD42, the early 88>@96 can be replaced without removing the retainer, from @96 > on the retainer is part of the seal and must be replaced, all can be replaced without removing the sump but must be done carefully so the sump gasket doesnt break. extra note - there is also a gasket behind the retainer that you will need if it is 96 > on type seal.
cheers

Hi Luke

I replaced mine a few months ago on my '97 model while replacing the clutch.
Although I did remove the sump as I wanted to replace the big end bearing at the same time, there is no reason that the seal cannot be replaced without removing the sump and/or the seal retainer.

$1000+ to replace seal + pull the g'box through a Nissan dealership. Apparently very common in the Patrol, some choose to just let it go. Probably a good idea to get the opinion of the Nissan patrol forum as well or a quote before going ahead with the fix. Cheers

If it helps - recently paid $1400 odd for rear main repair & new Exedy clutch through Patrolapart here in Melbourne (top blokes & know Patrols inside out). Most of the cost for the seal only will be in labour. Clutch was about $700, so I guess about $500-$600 in parts/labour for a RMS only. Prick of a job by all accounts.
